  1. OK, I must update my previous answer. I began my journey looking to upgrade my system & truck performance. It finally has come to an end & I couldn't be happier. However the journey was a bit enlightening not to mention costly. I added the TRD intake, then exhaust, & plugs. It felt like something was missing it sounded good at certain RPM & had good performance but what about the other 60 -70% of the time. Not happy! After some investigation I found that the factory Engine Control Unit (ECU) doesn't automatically adjust to these modifications. In essence, my engine was struggling. I finally added the X-One unit, some Doug Thorley LT headers & threw on a 6" lift & 17" rims. I now have the truck of my dreams! But, I think it only fair to tell whoever is thinking about adding some of these features to count the cost. I read numerous blogs & forums about intakes, exhaust, etc. No one told it like it was. Well...now you know. Good luck on your journey!!!

    Good looking truck!

  2. I'm going to give you a wild guess of about $6-7k as a retail value. On the one hand, it's pretty much a new car, on the other hand, it's an old car, not old enough to be a collector piece, and it's been sitting for most of the last 17 years. It will need most likely need some belts, hoses, tires, etc. because that stuff will get dry rot. Interesting find, though.

  3. I noticed the past 3-4 months that my 1999 Avalon's mpg has gone down. I used to get an average of about 22-21 mpg. But now I'm getting 17-18 mpg. I only have 84,000 miles on this car. I noticed my tires are getting low on tread. I change my oil regularly, but I did recently change my oil to synthetic-blend high mileage vehicle from regular oil. Maybe my car is just too old. Has anyone experienced something similar?

Have you done your scheduled maintenances? You're probably due for a tune-up.

  4. You're trying to just remove the bulbs? You should be able to pull them out from the back of the headlight case...open the hood and look at the back of one of them. If they are actually HIDs, do not touch the bulb with your skin as you can cause them to burn out sooner.

  5. Does your car come with synthetic oil? Toyota and Lexus are in the beginning stages of converting from 5k oil change intervals with regular oil to 10k intervals with a special synthetic blend (0w20, I think, with some sort of additive proprietary to Toyota). If you have regular oil, go with the 5k intervals; if you have synthetic, go with the 10k intervals. That does not mean you don't have a service every 5k, it just means that those in-between services aren't much more than a tire rotation and a checkup.

Your salesperson may not have realized that your car was one of the few that has already been converted to a 10k service schedule, because Toyota has been on a 5k service schedule for a long, long time, and this has only happened in the last few months. You'll want to verify with the service department to see if yours has synthetic or regular oil.

  6. Hi all. I drive a 2006 Prius. Lost my smart key at the gym and evidently some weirdo walked off with it instead of turning it in at the desk. So I'm driving with my spare smart key, and trying to figure out how to get a working backup key without spending $300 at my local Toyota dealer. (The best dealer quote in my area was $200 for a new smart key and $100 for cutting and programming.) The dealer told me the same labor cost would apply whether the key came from the dealership or elsewhere...don't know whether to believe that.

I can get a Prius smart key on eBay for as little as $20. Has anyone had success (or fail) with this method?

I found Prius smart keys on CarAndTruckRemotes for $150 new, $100 used, 30 day money back guarantee. Has this worked (or not) for anyone?

I also checked with KeylessRemotes. They do not sell Prius keys and they advised me "not" to buy a used smart key on eBay, etc., as they are "not" reprogrammable.

Is there a reliable alternative, or should I just bite the bullet and shell out $300 at the dealer?

    Thanks...

If you buy a key on eBay, etc., you will at a minimum have to pay to cut the metal portion of the key, plus programming, most likely at the dealer (if it even works...and I have also heard it both ways, so perhaps some smart keys are reprogrammable, some not), and you'll probably add at least another $100-150 for that.

Something to think about: you might want to get that new key somewhere very, very soon, because if you lose the second one too, you'll need a new computer plus 2 new keys in your car, and that's several thousand bucks.

  7. You have to realize that the manufacturer will install a tire that is designed to minimize noise and give a smooth ride and optimum performance. For that sort of tire, 34k miles is actually a bit above average, so you've done well. For example, I'm at 21k on my car, and at last check, I had 4/32 left on my tires, so I will need new ones in the next few thousand miles.

What is your goal with your new tires? Are you interested exclusively in longevity? Why the width change?

  8. I probably sound like a broken record on this one, but have you checked to see if there's a TRD exhaust for your car? Anything from TRD will be more expensive, but it will also be good quality, fit perfectly, not void your warranty, and be covered under warranty itself.

  9. I have a '96 Camry Collector's Edition with the gold exterior lettering. Unfortunately, the "Camry" lettering across the back of the car, between the tailights, has fallen off, one letter at a time. One of them was gone when I got the car, and the others have subsequently come loose. I noticed another about to fall off today, so I finished the job and pulled it off. I then checked the others, and they were in similar condition and very loose, so I pulled them off as well. Does anyone know of a source where I can get new ones? I've got 3 or 4 of the ones that were on there, but the letters themselves separated from the adhesive backing, and the finish is pretty well worn on them. I guess I could glue them back on their backings, but I don't have all of them, plus new ones would look a lot better. Any input/suggestions would be appreciated.

I can tell you that it's probably not sold by the letter...it's probably one part through Toyota, and may be even one kit for the whole car because that was a pretty rare care. You could possibly still order it from a Toyota dealer, shouldn't be too expensive.

  10. great. the newer technology is nice, in many ways. you dont use the trunk ? i have stuff that i use on a daily basis that stays in the trunk, permanently. when i first started looking, i told the salespeople that trunk storage was my main concern. i am not fussy about the car itself. and i already knew that any car i was likely to buy would drive as well or better than my 85 pickup. and i was happy with that.

but i was thinking more about space inside the trunk. i had no idea that it would be that hard to find a car with a trunk that was not part of the interior. oh well - it is taken care of. the next car i buy will be an electric vehicle.

most people dont know it yet - but the electric vehicle is gonna take the world by storm. for quite a few years, the manufacturers will have no way to keep up with the demand.

these next 5 years should be very interesting, as charging stations begin to appear, etc.

No, the only thing in my trunk is a cargo net...my car is pretty much back and forth to work, and I try not to keep much stuff in the car at all, just some CDs, sunglasses, and registration/insurance docs. I hate having stuff roll around in the car, and when you drive like I do, that happens a lot.

Electric (and other alternative powertrains) will take off as soon as the range restrictions and part availability issues are resolved. I'd drive a Tesla now, but $100k is a bit steep for a electric Lotus.

  11. sure. that is true of old car trunks, as well. someone could steal the car, if they had a mind to do so. but i want it to be as difficult as it once was. breaking into the car, and pulling down the seats - heck i may as well bend over and invite them to give me a kick. at least now, i make it quite a bit more difficult - such that they arent gonna waste time breaking into my trunk, when they could much more easily break into the trunks of 50 other nearby vehicles.

sometimes people get carried away with things. inside trunk latches is one of them. for an insignificant convenience, they lose the whole idea of a trunk. like i said, i find it to be absolutely ridiculous.

there are many nice features to my new car. i can choose to have the outside mirrors move down when i put it into reverse. if i remember to put the parking brake on, the car seat moves back automatically when i pull the key out. there are all sorts of adjustments to the seats. my outside mirrors fold back, so less chance of them getting clipped in a parking lot. quite a few more. but the best of all - from within the trunk, i can make it so that only a key opens the trunk, and the seats cant be folded down. in other words, i have one of the few newer cars that actually has a TRUNK.

I can do that too...push the hidden button inside my glove box that turns off all trunk releases, lock the glove box, and I'm good to go. No fold down seat, and I can lock the little pass-through door to the trunk. My mirrors move down when in reverse, the steering wheel moves up and out of the way automatically when I turn the car off, no key required, just push the start button as long as I have the smart key with me. Not that I ever use the trunk, or the back seat for that matter, but I could...
