  1. You should probably do the complete timing belt service, plus tune-up, etc. You're due. $900 for the belt & water pump is pretty high, but doesn't sound too horribly bad...it's mostly labor, actually. The belt itself is about $60.

$3500 for the complete 90k service is not even close to the right price. I can't imagine the whole service being more than $1000-1200, worst case. Double check that price. Is it possibly they said $350 more, not $3500? $3500 is more like a new transmission price.

Get it done at a Toyota dealer, you'll have Toyota Certified tech work on it, and if there's any issues, it'll be warrantied for awhile. Get it done elsewhere, and it'll be cheaper.

  2. Most likely cause: belt - replace with a GoodYear Gatorback belt

other causes - belt tensioner going bad

least likely but has happened before: water pump leaking fluid onto belt causing the sound you hear

Didn't think about the tensioner...that could be it too. If so, you might as well replace the belt while you're getting that done (if that is the case).

  3. Hello!

Got to say that I've been SUPER happy with my 2001 Toyota Camry. Purchased in 2000 and wasn't quite sure about it, but 8 years later its still going strong - NO mechanical issues whatsoever and it's one of the Japanese built vehicles.

In comparison, my old (and now gone) Chevrolet Corsica was a bucket of bolts: paint peeling, changed the battery at least 6 times in 10 years, changed the alternater yearly.

The car has been very dependable, and to this day I've not heard any squeeks or thuds. It's get-up and go, is still there.

I can't see myself ever owning a North American vehicle again (GM/FORD/CHRYSLER).

    Mo

Welcome! Awesome car. How many miles do you have on it?

  4. The 6in1 CD Changer in my wife's 2006 Sierra will not eject any of the disks it holds. Also, only 2 or 3 of the 6 disks can currently be played. How do I fix this problem? How common is it?

Pretty common problem actually. Especially if any of those discs are ones you burned yourself. If that's the case, you'll probably have to send the radio into Toyota.

  5. Right now playing 'waiting game' the battery terminals remain temporarily disconnected-- car still emits an alarm sound when I connect the battery. The fuse for the horn was removed to squelch the horrible noise, and I have yet to put the fuse back in. Haven't tried to turn over the engine; towtruck driver thought I'd probably need a new battery.

I'm hoping that all will be OK once moisture is 'gone'

    thanks for advice

    Good luck!!

  6. I've done that before...got the passenger footwell of one of my Supras completely soaking wet (car wash gone bad). After doing strange things for an hour or so, like power locks flipping on and off without hitting the button, and windows rolling down spontaneously, it eventually dried out and was completely fine.

  7. I see you live in Toronto. Do the road crews use salt or sand on the roads? Salt corrodes alloy wheels, and is probably the cause of your issues. If you talk to some of your local dealers, they probably know a person that can refinish those wheels for you...it's just paint + clear coat.

  8. I have a 2005 Corolla that is about ready for a break job and was wondering if the rotors need to be re surfaced. I have had Hondas for years and they suggest that you do not resurface them. Also someone suggested that the rotors should be replaced and thoughts?

How many miles are on your car?

And yes, if you're doing pads, it's a good idea to resurface the rotors too.

  9. Here in Arizona the Sun can glare your vision to the point that you have a hard time seeing the Speedometer needle. I ware glasses to correct my vision, so it's not like I'm driving blind, but the distance to the speedometer face and the glare make it hard to see the needle. With all the budget cuts in city governments, you don't want to go over the speed limit here. Can you think of a cure for the problem i.e. florescent paint, some kind of magnifier lens that could be placed in front of the gauge face. Joe

How about tinting your windows? Most people here in Vegas do that, and we have pretty much the same environment you do.

  10. I just got a new 09 Rav4 V6 and like it a lot. I would like to haul my also new Hobie Adventure Island kayak on top. However, it weighs 110 lbs. The owners manual says that max load on luggage carrier is 102.6 lbs. Will adding Yakima or Thule cross bars help or will I be forever limited to the 102.6 lbs. I'm trying to avoid buying a trailer and don't want to mess up my new car. Thanks for any advise.

I think exceeding the weight limit by 7.4 lbs isn't going to hurt things. Toyota usually puts a lower limit on things than what the rack/hitch/cargo capacity, etc. can actually do.

  11. We recently replaced the tires on my wife's 2005 Sienna. The place that did the work also checked the alignment. The front was slightly out and they fixed it. The back is also slightly out, left toe 0.42 (spec -0.16 to 0.41) and total toe 0.59 (spec -0.03 to 0.53). However, they said to fix the rear, they need a special $69 "shim kit" and another $85 in labor. Is this legit? The local toyota dealer said they don't sell a "shim kit." I found a place on the web that says they do but it only costs $13.

    Thanks.

Could be. You might want to have the Toyota guys just do the alignment...can't be much more than the $69 + $85 the tire guys want, and you'll have a Toyota Certified guy doing the work at Toyota.

  12. 1992 Toyota Sera. 5 speed.

I hate selling this beautiful little car, but I am starting a business and I need to raise capital, so the toys must go - OUCH!

She is a 5 speed with only 50K original miles. EVERYTHING works perfect. I just installed new brakes all around and new phase III door struts, so they open perfect.

This amazing little RHD coupe turns heads more than any other car I have ever owned. The buyer will not be disappointed.

Serious inquiries only. More info and pictures are here: http://www.ourvictorianhouse.com/Craigs%20Sera.html

    First $8000 takes her home.

    Cute!

  13. Does anyone know if there is a mellow sounding muffler available for my 2008 Solara? My previous car was a Porsche Boxster S and it had a great sound.

I definately do not want it to be too loud. I just want a bit of sound.

    Tman :)

Did you check with TRD? www.trdusa.com Parts are Toyota parts, so warranty and fit are not an issue.

  14. I have a 2007 and took it to the dealer in North Austin, TX who wasted a full day of my time. The service manager told me they will fix the problem. When I went to the shop at the appointed time the rattle was not fixed. All they had done was to take the car for a ride and confirmed the problem. They they just sat there doing nothing. I complained to the service manager who told me they do not want me to come back and did not want my business. I complained to the owner, he said he can stop servicing any one he did not like (Chales Maund Toyota). Complained to Toyota USA, they were defending the dealer. Was frustrated with the whole damn idea of going through Toyota system that I wanted to get an attorney involved and sue the hell out of them when I realized I am wasting my time. This happened about 4 months ago.

I fixed the problem myself by inserting a few strips of foam between the dash and the top of the plastic covering the odometer area. I will never go to the Toyota system for service again. I am changing oil in a nice private garage.

Am glad that Prius is the best technology in the market and up to 100K miles, it needs nothing but liquid change. So, I like the car but hate the abusive dealers. Hopefully, their behavior will weed them out of the system. Best

    A couple observations:

1.) Squeaks, rattles, and small noises are the hardest thing to fix in any car. They are more difficult to isolate and properly fix than any mechanical issue. It's good that you were able to repair the issue yourself.

2.) Dealers get paid to fix your car...if you pay them or if Toyota pays them, they get paid...it's not like they're repairing your car for free even if it's a warranty repair issue. They don't care where the money comes from. If they did not want to fix your car, there may have been a little more to your story?
