  1. Reading this thread again,

perhaps since it has doing that since you 1st got it, you might want to check the starter.

Also the 1zz-fe motor is known to have weird idle issues, so it may or may not be related.

I would suggest having the starter checked out 1st.

2nd - have the alternator diagnosed after the starter.

Hope you finally find the issue.

  2. Do you inadvertantly step on the brake while driving down the road?

I have seen a few drivers do that.

Prematurely wearing the brake pads like that can cause multiple trips to the dealer for new pads installation.

  3. Overall it is a typical transmission.

It does tend to run a bit hot so figure ATF fluid change or flush every 15k or 20k miles.

That is the only problem I have had with it since I got it on May 31st 2002.

    Currently @ 95k miles.

Cruise control feature will struggle when going on a slight uphill, which may be due to the lack of torque. Nothing big but still get very good fuel mileage.

Torque converter lock occurs depending on revs and environment, happens from 1st to 2nd gear shift from the auto. tranny.

And as for the Toyota A and U transmissions:

  4. I own a very gently used 1993 Corolla station wagon and I've noticed the past few times it has rained, when I go to put my seatbelt on the belt itself is soaking wet. I pulled off the inner frame cover and saw no cracks in the retractor piece/cover.

Does anyone else have this problem or any suggestions on how to fix it?

Also, there is a pretty bad smell coming from the vent, nothingn rotten, just a kinda dirty smell. More when the vent is open to let outside air in. When I have the A/C on and it's circulating the air from in the car it doesn't smell. Any ideas on a fix?

    -Clutch

    Mold on the A/C condenser.

Wet seatbelt might mean there is an opening perhaps from the bottom of the Corolla wagon, might be due to rust or damage.

    check underneath.

    Hope you find the issue.

    Power Locks & Windows

To make a long story short, my son locked the keys in the car, stupid me doesn't have a second set. We had a friend try to jimmy the lock & in the process has completely disabled the drivers door. needless to say we are unable to unlock or open the drivers' door...a very important feature my son has come to love in this car! I have taken the door panel off and I have the window rolled up, all the other doors & windows open so I don't die from the heat in this process. I have tried every which way to see where the 2 smaller rods and the rod attached to the handle all connect. I have resorted to laying in the drivers seat with my feet in the air (very entertaining for the neighbors), trying to get a good look inside the panel, since I can't get the door open. The two smaller rods are still connected to the door panel, but one of them looks pretty bent up, the other one I am assuming somehow attaches inside the hole on the door knob. I'm tired of trying to be a super mom, I just need help! I hope I have made sense, we went through Hurricane Ike & have been without power since the storm, my mind is fried from the heat & I typing this out on my cell phone. Thanks to anyone who can help me out.

sorry to hear all that you are going through. . .

sounds like when your son tried to slim jim the driver side door - he bent the the connector, try to "re bend" the connector and see if that works, worst case - take it to a mechanic or body shop you trust to make this simple repair - should only cost one hour at the most of labor time.

Hope things work out for you and your son!

  6. XR2003,

I appreciate your quick response to my post. However, I have just recently (at 27,000 miles) had the injection manifold flushed and cleaned by the dealer. Now, I am no mechanic (or technician, as they prefer to be called these days) so my question is this: are the MAF sensor and the injection manifold related? Are they the same? I honestly don't know.

Also keep in mind, this starting has been like this since I purchased the car (which is really why I would like to know if this is standard, being that this is my first Toyota/Corolla).

    Thanks again.

MAF is located near the air filter box:

    mafstockintake7kd.jpg

injection manifold service? does that refer to the intake manifold which is the black plastic on the front of the engine?

Still - that is unrelated to the MAF sensor.

    Hard starting condition:

found this for you, contact the dealer and ask them if there is a TSB for this "hard starting" conditions on Corollas.

    Hope you find the answer.
