  1. Yep. Tried all those options. Our local Toyota dealer isn't known for its friendly personnel...

No luck at any of the junkyards, either...BUT - I found a new OEM Toyota bra on ebay (folks bought it, took it out, put it on, didn't like the looks, took it back off and put it back in the box.) for little more than what the dealer would have taken me for. So I am happy enough. Would like to think about taking the bra off, but it has been on for four years, so the paint has faded, I'm sure, and where the bra attaches the black has rubbed into the finish. I don't really mind its looks - and it does make it easier to find in a parking lot!

    Thanks for your reply..........

    Scooter

No problem, glad you got what you needed.

If the Toyota dealer you go to sucks, there are always other dealerships willing to help.

Just need to find where they are.

    Not all dealerships are "stealerships".

  2. Pictures and of course stating your location.

By the 714 area code - I see that you live in the Orange County area of Southern California.

If you are unsure of how to post pix, assuming you have a digital camera.

Upload the pictures onto a free image website such as photobucket.com or imageshack.us.

That would enable the Original Poster to display pics of the Solara for sale thus enhancing the chances of a quick sell.

    and welcome to TOC!

  3. It's been out a couple of months now, and wanted to reserve a spot for the new generation Matrix owners here.

AWD, Base, S & XRS go ahead and post pics of your ride!

edited as there is no XR models for the 2009.

  4. thank you for all the replies just upset at the time and pissed that i have to replace this motor. never had problems with toyota until i bought this matrix just figured it was a bad design on the motor or just a bad motor. just wanted to put the 2zz not just because of the power just because i have never heard any problems with the 2zz engine. well i am waiting to see how much a short block is for now what the hell else can i do right lol. thanks angain

actually the 2zz motor has a little more issues, due to it's high performance nature. as such, 2zz owners tend to "enjoy" LIFT (powerband from 6200 - to redline) a bit too much.

The LIFT bolts do need to be properly cared for as well.

Other than the power advantage, 1zz motors do have better fuel mileage and a slight torque advantage over the 2zzs - of course until LIFT kicks in.

In your case, it may just a bad motor which is not a common issue.

Did you get your car used or new?

If used, the prior owner may not have cared for it properly.

  5. More torque is ALWAYS better...especially when accompanied by more horsepower. As that car already gets 30mpg or so, what's a mile or so per gallon loss anyway? Carpool once in awhile, and you'll make up for it...

When I test drive one of the 09's, I'll let you know if this is true.

    ;)

  7. Well...I think you've had some very good contributions so far. You've been very helpful with a lot of information on Toyota 4cylinders. I'm pretty much restricted to the 6 cylinders and up for most of my knowledge.

    Thank you!!!

    :) B) :D

  8. What attracted me to the 1st gen matrix was the design reminded me of those mid - 90s Honda Civic hatchbacks.

Being a Toyota made it even better, which is why I got mine on May of 2002.

But I am starting to consider of trading in this one for the new 2009 Matrix XRS.....

^ what was I thinking? I love my Matrix.....

more torque is great in the 2009, but sacrificing MPG (03-08 Models got better mileage) is a bit confusing especially with summer approaching.

I expect the new generation Matrix to sell better than the 1st gen though.

  9. Perhaps engine sludge from the dino oil that was in there previously.

    Was the car new?

    Was it properly maintained?

The CEL should go away, but i suggest getting the code read 1st.

After doing so, you can remove the CEL by either removing the negative terminal to the battery for about 5-10 minutes or removing the ECU fuse under the hood for about 5-10 minutes.

You have an 04 Corolla, so I believe you have the 1zz-fe motor. That being the case with a filter change you would need about 4.5 quarts of oil.

The symptoms you described sound like engine sludge and the synthetic is cleaning it out.

  10. From the the first time I bought the matrix for my wife in 2004 I seem to have problems with the engine. the first 50 thousand miles she put on the car it spun a bearing Toyota replaced at no charge . I always use full synthetic oil at 3000 to 3200 hundred miles even though you don't have to change every 5000 thousand with synthetic. now this Wednesday with no warning it threw the piston rod through the oil pan at 100 thousand miles. I did some research and found out there has been some problems with this engine 1ZZFE also found out that this is an American made engine WHICH I DID NOT KNOW but, i also found out that the matrix XRS comes with a 2ZZ-GE engine and is straight from Japan. This is what i would like to do, now that being said i know that the 2ZZ-GE engine fits but, is there any mods that i have to do to it besides change ECU and transmission. greatly appreciate any help thank you,

    Sincerely, Jon

Sorry to hear that you got a lemon 1zz motor in your Matrix.

I hope you were under warranty to have the issues taken care of.

I have never heard that the same car can have a spun bearing & a thrown rod, unless it was boosted with some Forced Induction power addder and even then not many have had the issues that you had.

Correction to your post though. The 1zz motor is Toyota's own which I believe is made in Canada (IIRC the Vibe & 9thgen Corolla are made in California) & the 2zz motor is Yamaha made.

To convert your 1zz Matrix to a 2zz powered one would require:

different motor, different tranny, different ECU, different shifter assembly, and a different gauge cluster.

It would be very difficult & very expensive, but it can be done I suppose if you throw enough money on it.

It would be more cost effective to get a new 1zz-fe motor, and if you want more power - get a TRD S/C or perhaps go turbo.

  11. I vaguely remember having problems when I put synthetic in a VVT-i car. Don't remember what it was, but this discussion stirs up bad memories. Maybe someone could research this?

    Okay here goes.

Was using regular dino oil for about a year.

Switched to Mobil 1 full synthetic (yes i heard that Mobil 1 may be using Group 3 rumors, don't believe the rumors myself), immediately noticed smoother operation, ease of acceleration, & maybe better fuel economy.

That is my personal experience & research.

    I have a 1zz-fe motor with VVT-i.

I used to have a Corolla GTS with the 4a-ge motor.

    Same results/experience.
