Lone Eagle
Me and my wife just got her aunt's '81 Toyota truck from her. 82K actual miles, and chassis and body in pristine condition. I only have one minor problem. It has the 22R motor with the 2-bbl progressive(hope this is the right term) carb. The fuel pump went south from 5 yrs of sitting. Replaced that, ran good for about 15 min., then died. Supply line in tank had rusted shut. Cleaned that out, runs like new. We took it out for a test drive, and it started dropping a cylinder. Doesn't affect the powerband, but shakes the entire truck on acceleration. I'm checking the plugs out tomorrow(does it at idle now), and was wondering if a valve out of adjustment or sticking would cause this? I have experience with all kinds of motors, but this is the first Toyota I have fooled with. Any help is greatly appreciated, as wife is sentimentally attatched to this rig. :P
fidgits
if its been sat for 5 years, then it could be one of quite a few things - i think the more you fiddle and drive it, the more it'll loosen up...
Lone Eagle
Well, got it going. Bad plug in #3 cyl. Had a set of NGK V-powers from my Chrysler, popped them in, purrs like a kitten now. What brand of plug is recommended for these trucks? If I can swing it, I'll go NGK. Full tune to come when money allows. :D

Pretend YOU are the carburator, go gently so as not to cause a fire. A lot of carbon is probably in the intake. This process should take at least 20 minutes to do it safely. When finished, put in a can of Berryman's B12. Drive it for a few miles and then take the NGK plugs out and clean them with emery board (your wife's nail file). Have you changed the fuel filter? Outlawed~Rice
Wish ya luck on that 81' truck. B) I too picked up an 87' 1/2 ton, similar to one I owned as a teen, and fell in love all over again. They just don't make'em this fun anymore, thats for sure. Lone Eagle
Been a while since I posted, so here's the update. Truck is running like a top. found out the emissions computer had taken a dump, and was causing the problem of the early choke pull-off and the running rich. Replaced with a unit from a '83 Supra, choke functions flawless. Took the old girl out on the I-state, and give it a good blowing-out. This little thing will get up and move. Ended up replacing the fuel pick-up tube in the tank with a new unit from the boneyard. All that's left now is paint, suspension and body work. I was amazed at how clean the radiator was, being it's the original unit. Another Toyota lives on!! BTW....DMV here almost crapped, as the truck is 25 yrs. old and exempt from emissions. Anyone know how to remove the EGR system without harming the motor? I've already dropped the catcon from it, and I think the EGR is on the way out now. Seems the emissions puter only controls the EGR, one solenoid on the carb, and the choke pull-off, which I an easilly bypass the latter.
