  1. You did end up doing the job the right way. Notwithstanding multiple trips to Advance and Sears. Trial and error, as they say. My only question is did you use/consider a synthetic or semi-synthetic gear oil?

Did manual transmission oil change today for first time. Got data from Haynes Repair Manual to use API GL-5 75-90 w gear oil.  Found it at Advance Auto parts store in quart containers.

Jacked up car and used jack stands.  Slid under car and could not find either drain or fill/check plugs.  Took off splash cover on left side to get better view of tranmission.  It has about 6  small  ( 10 mm) bolts and two screws.  Screws come out of a plastic backing and the bolts from nuts held in place.  Want to note which came from which hole.  Used a six inch extension on the ratchet to remove some of these.

Still could not find drain or  fill/check plugs even after rechecking Haynes.  Went to the Toyota Repain Manual and found the plugs pictured in a diagram in the transaxle section.  The plugs are  24 mm  hexagonals.  The fill and check plug is at the front of the car and the drain is on left side.  It did not seem to me that the plugs were separated vertically by much . Maybe 1.5 ".  Got 24 mm socket from  Sears for about $4.00.

Undid the fill/check plug and had some run off of the fluid.  Let me know it was full.  Replugged this and removed the drain plug.

The pain is in getting the gear oil back into the transmission.  The plastic bottles are too big for the space available to be able to squirt it in directly.  Got a funnel from Advance Auto  with a calibrated cup on top and about 18" inches of tubing at the bottom. Could thread the tubing down from behind the radiator and stick the end into the fill/check hole.  Supposed to fill until the fluid just begins to come out or about 2.7 quarts.  Moved the drain pan under the fill hole and put the first two quarts in pretty quickly.  Went slower in adding the last part letting the tubing clear before adding more to the funnel.  When it began to overflow, pulled the tubing out and let it drip in the drain pan.  Put in the plug and tightened.  Did not see a torque rating for these plugs so just tightened them.

The time delays were in getting the 24 mm socket- get the short socket -and in getting the funnel with the tubing.  Had also tried a suction pump but it was faulty and would not suck.  Funnel worked well and quickly and it was cheaper.

Seemed silly to have to take off the splash board to get to the drain and fill/check plugs but I could not figure any other way.  It is really a pretty quick job to undo the bolts and screws and to set the splash board aside.

Given the right tools, this job can be done in less than 30 minutes including the jacking up of the car and the placing of the jack stands.  I combined it with an oil change and  I fooled around trying to figure out things for a long time.  Hopefully I will remember what to do next time<G>.

BTW  on the Car Talk web site someone recommends letting your service people do this job.  They said they can do a better job of flushing the transmission. Might be so but it was a fun job if you just want to play with your tools.

  2. What kind of spark plugs are you running? Irridium, correct? If not, correct this. Also, for $40, get a K&N air filter.

A few extra horses for a few extra bucks.

Also try the Mobil DriveClean 7500 5W30 oil--another 1 or 2 miles per gallon.

  3. Let the people in this forum know if you have a bad CV joint, OK?

    STEVE

Both directions, I'm going to take it back into the dealer and have them take a closer look...brakes included. Thanks for the help.

  4. Does it happen only when you turn in one direction or both directions?

Full Lock?? Not sure, I did notice yesterday it sometimes happens when I hit the brake. How could this be caused by worn-out calipers, the car only has 22.000 miles? Does the rack and pinion assembly need to be greased periodically? Thanks

  5. My 94 Corolla was broken into and they DID get my CD player. So I went to a place I have bought from before, a place I know and trust, which has a big selection of everything, plus free product advice online or with a human:

    www.crutchfield.com

The prices are good, they telll you what you need to know, and they help you compare products.

  6. That code is for "lean", as in the air/fuel mixture. Stick your finger up the tailpipe and wipe the inside. What color is the ask inside? Is it gray? That would be too lean. If it is black it's probably not. Also check your spark plugs.

After having two Toyota Dealerships analyze the ' Check Engine ' light

on our 2000 Toyota 4-Runner, they each came up with differing

answers as to what needed to be done based on the fact that

their computer showed up a Code P0171

Can anyone advise what code P0171 actually means ?

  7. The Tornado works. I am running one in my Camry and i picked up 1 or 2 miles per gallon, plus I changed the Iridium plug when I put it in.

Did you pull the fuse out to reset the ECU when you changed it or just disconnect the battery?

I did the same, replaced Oxygen O2 Sensor on the headers, and got 4 - 5 miles per gallon less.

  8. Thanks for the heads up, STEVE. This would also be a good occasion to remind everyone to download the latest virus definitions for their anti-virus software.

Just thought i would post this for member protection.

Seems some saddo posted some kind of Trojan software for members to download on our other forums. Luckily it was caught in time. We think this Trojan will post password information back to the sad git who posted the link to the executable file.

Please be carefull what is posted on the boards. Any file with the .exe file extension should not be downloaded and reported to a moderator immediatly.

Warn your fellow members if you see weird links to files.

    thanks

  9. Well, got it going.  Bad plug in #3 cyl.  Had a set of NGK V-powers from my Chrysler, popped them in, purrs like a kitten now. What brand of plug is recommended for these trucks?  If I can swing it, I'll go NGK.  Full tune to come when money allows. :D

Since it is running now, go ahead based on what you have stated, get a can of carb cleaner, detach the intake hose, be careful, start it up, and manually shoot it in little by little over time. Pretend YOU are the carburator, go gently so as not to cause a fire. A lot of carbon is probably in the intake. This process should take at least 20 minutes to do it safely. When finished, put in a can of Berryman's B12. Drive it for a few miles and then take the NGK plugs out and clean them with emery board (your wife's nail file). Have you changed the fuel filter?

  10. Time to go to the dealership. Where did you buy the car? This will determine issues such as Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act, venue and jurisdiction, and general civil procedure issues should the matter go to litigation.

No I do not have that feature.

The dealer says that my Corolla LE does not have Intrustion Detection.  the blilnking light on the dash only indicates that the electronic immobilization feature is armed.  But I don't remember seeing Intrusion Detection being offered as an option before or after the sale.  So I'm wondering, do other LE owners have Intrusion Detection pre-installed by default?

  11. Can you take the air filter housing out and look below it? If so, and you have the 4a-f, 4a-fe or 7a-fe engine. The starter mounting bolts should be 12 mm or 14 mm. If you don't see the starter there, then you have the 4a-ge engine---which is a completley different story. So let me know.

My 94 corolla has a new battery, when I turn the key I get a clicking noise, but the car does not turn over.  Starter???? Where is the starter located on this car.

  12. I have the same car, also with Bridgestones on it. Did you rotate them and balance them? I believe they do wear a little quickly, but mine handles just fine. Have you done an alignment recently?

Have a 2002 Camry that came with Bridgestone Potenzas.  Never had a car that handled this badly on snow or ice.  Even with my low mileage the tires are worn so I'm looking at Goodyear's Assurance Triple Tred.

Anyone else had this handling problem and any suggestions/recommendations?

  13. On your 2006 Corolla, do you have a lock which when opened with the key one way prevents it from being opened again from the outside until the key is turned the other direction? Dealer might want to look at the ground connection.

    Hi:

According to the manual for my two-day old 2006 Corolla, the intrusion detection system should start alarming if the car is locked and the trunk is opened with the key.  The manual specifically says to unlock the car (with the remote or with the key) before opening the trunk.  But nothing happens when I open the trunk before unlocking the car; no alarms go off.  The flashing indicator on the dashboard indicates that the system is set...

    Did I miss something?

  14. I have been running Mobil Drive Clean 7500 semi-synthetic for a while now in my Camry and, coupled with the K & N filter I have picked up a noticable mileage gain. But fulll synthetic is uneccesary unless you are racing your Avalon.

I just purchased a 2000 Avalon and I'm loving it!!!  Has anyone had any good or bad experiences running synthetic oil.
