  1. What's the performance of Prius in the snow ...in the northern part of the country with winter seasons???  :)

They're excellent. I used to live in Michigan, and one day we got three feet of snow in one day. My office closed up early, we all went home (I had to get a ride home from a co-worker with a 4WD truck because I drove my Supra in to work that morning), and the next day almost everyone was snowed in. Most of our staff didn't even make it in to work that day, and some of the people who lived close to the office drove in on snowmobiles because the snow was so deep that day. Our general manager was the first person to arrive at work the next morning after the storm, and he drove from Grand Rapids to Lansing (about 60 miles) in his Prius...no problem.

  2. from what my mechanic is telling me is that there is coolant is everywere sd that fixing the head will cost me about 1500 and putting in another motor + labor ..would be 1500 thats how much he charges for a swap like that from what you guys are telling me thats a good deal! now he is in process of looking for a motor for me but i was thinking if i could get a motor were would be a good place i have checked ebay not that many on there seems like the junkyard is the place to be ....when i get a chance i will take some pics and post it on there the mechanic is closed today

Junkyard might be the place to start...unless you can find someone selling another old Camry that runs but has a lot of physical problems like rust, body damage, etc. You could buy that pretty cheap and do a transplant!

  3. $1,500 isnt bad for a new engine.. but a head gasket would be much cheaper..

If the car came free - and the new motor is in good nick, it'll be good for 100k, if its taken care of, so look at it as $1500 for 50k trouble free motoring... assuming you trust the guy!

$1500 is pretty cheap, especially if that includes labor. But you should definitely look into that head gasket replacement instead...unless the head gasket problem caused the engine to terminally overheat. A head gasket is at worst a few hundred bucks.

  4. Well, I spent last week in Stateline NV (apologies for not being around here), I have to say, stunning scenery, Lake Tahoe is just superb...

But i wasnt sure about the town, one half was nice and quaint, whereas the NV side was just built up casino's, and kinda ruined the whole place IMO...

Looks pretty nice. I just found out I'm moving to Vegas, and I don't think it's that far. Maybe I'll get a chance to make a trip to Lake Tahoe. Hope you had fun!

  5. My 96 has 163k on it, and it has had very minor problems, in fact just two, the master cylinder went out and they replaced the steering rack at the same time under warranty, but I just replaced front struts finally, still have a little noise though, I think if you maintain it, change oil so you don't get toyota sludge problem, your car will last along time.  I bought it used for 10k and could sell if for 2k now with some blemishes, good bang for your buck IMHO.

You won't get the Toyota sludge problem...it's only on the 3.0 V6 in Camry, Avalon, Solara, Sienna, ES300, and RX300.

  6. driven one of these for a few hours testing and I can say these are a fantastic car. The electronics are great!

I loved when the car was in stealth mode driving through a parking lot... catch a few people out.  :D  :D

That's neat when it's moving along and you can't hear anything at all. You can really surprise people that way, so you have to watch out.

A few years ago, my company had a seminar on hybrid cars at a local hotel, and there was a Prius there. It was supposed to go into one of the meeting rooms for a demonstration, but the hotel staff said "hey, you can't drive a car in here - it's a fire hazard!!". We told them it was an electric car, drove very slowly through the hotel lobby to the conference room, and the engine never started up once...they never knew the difference. Fun!

  7. well im wondering if the connections are the same and the size is close. i know the 300 is a little bigger.... well wish me luck anyways. i dont know what to do. i have very limited funds. i was even thinking of putting my driving light in the hole just to be able to drive at night.

I don't think it'll fit. The tailights and headlights are different from the Camry. Did you check a junkyard for a headlamp? You should be able to find one pretty cheap. Good luck!!

  8. Recently my 95' corolla got broken in to, they tried to steal my CD player, but where not able to and now I would like to invest in a really good anti theft system, but i am still a High school student and I don't have much to drop on a really expensive system. I would like to ask what kind of system is good, but won't leave me broke?

Try VIPER. I had it on a car in the past, and it was pretty good. Didn't get set off by little things like a cat walking across the hood, and wasn't terribly expensive. You can get a remote start too. I think Circuit City or Best Buy installs them.

  9. I bought a 2004 Saturn Ion in Sept 2003.  Since buying it i have had 13 different problems with the car, some of which took several trips to the dealer to fix.    Some of the problems i have had appear to be all too comon with other ION owners.  I was wondering if there are any such problems with Corollas.  I know Toyota has a great reputation for reliability, longevity, yadda yadda yadda.......I want to know how owners feel about their cars.  Also, what warranty does Toyota offer?  Saturn has a standard 3 year, 36,000 mile bumper-to-bumper, everything that goes wrong (as long as it was not caused by owner/accident etc.) is covered.  And for those of you who have had problems, what are your experiences with the service dept. at your dealer?  Were they prompt, willing to fix things without attitude, and thorough?  They used duct tape to fix a trunk leak in my ION, and on several occasions said they could/would not adress problems i was reporting unless they could reproduce them (which is hard to do when some of these problems were completely random, but common enough to be annoying/dangerous).  I don't expect all new cars to be perfect, but i have had far too many problems with this car to think that it is going to last me the 100,000 miles i had hoped to get out of it.  Needless to say i am not a happy camper.

Soo.  Any Corolla owners' experiences would be appreciated, i want to make the right decision for my next car.

I'm not a Corolla owner, but some of my friends have Corollas...and they last FOREVER!! My in-laws have a 20 year old Corolla that's still running great. And even if something goes wrong with your Corolla, it'll still be far less than what you have to do on a Saturn. If you get on Edmunds.com, there's a cost of ownership calculator...you can compare the Corolla vs. Saturn or anything else.

Plus: you can drive a Corolla for 10 years, and still sell it for $2,000 or so. A 10 year old Saturn is worth about $100.

As for service, Toyota's got a reputation to protect. They'll take care of you. Basic warranty 3 years/36k, 5 years/60k powertrain.

  10. No I do not have that feature.

The dealer says that my Corolla LE does not have Intrustion Detection.  the blilnking light on the dash only indicates that the electronic immobilization feature is armed.  But I don't remember seeing Intrusion Detection being offered as an option before or after the sale.  So I'm wondering, do other LE owners have Intrusion Detection pre-installed by default?

I'm not absolutely positive, but I think it's an option on the LEs.

  11. I have Bridgestone Potenzas on the back of my Gs300 and are nice tires.. but  a little noisey for a luxury car.

I agree on the noisy part. They were great on my Supra for handling, wet traction, etc., but they are a bit loud. But it was a Supra, and already loud, so I didn't mind.

There's a guide on tirerack.com that helps you decide on what tires will work for your car and driving conditions:

    http://www.tirerack.com/tires/dg/SelectAutoMakeAndYear.jsp

    Hope this helps!

  12. I have the same car, also with Bridgestones on it. Did you rotate them and balance them? I believe they do wear a little quickly, but mine handles just fine. Have you done an alignment recently?

I had Bridgestone Potenzas on my Supra...drove it year round in Michigan weather with no issues. Sounds to me like Stevelaw is right. Did you check tire pressure, alignment, and do your regular rotations?

Another thought: do you happen to have a Camry SE? Those came with a special speed rated tire that is great for going around corners fast, but not so good in the winter. When you replace your tires, just make sure you get an all-season tire instead of a speed-rate performance tire. There's different kinds of Bridgestone Potenzas; some high-performance, some high mileage.

  13. I'm a new Camry wagon owner (1995).  Compared to other wagons (MB, Volvo) I've looked at and owned, the roof rack seems pretty wimpy.  Since we have the third seat and use it, I depend on the rack often. I would like to put luggage, furniture, bikes and other things on top for long 300-400mi drives, but the strength of the rack worries me.

Does anyone have any ideas how I could improve my rack? Aftermarket or factory options?

    Thanks,

    -Mike

Did you check out Yakima.com? Or Thule?

  14. I'm a recent Supra owner...just sold my 1994 Turbo (the third Supra I've owned).

    What do you drive?

    90 toyota supra...7mgte power rocks B) 1125590246211.jpg

Now I have a 911 Turbo and a 2006 GS300 AWD. Just sold my Camry too. I feel a little odd...10+ years of Toyota ownership, and suddenly no Toyota. The Lexus is close, though.

  15. I just purchased a 2000 Avalon and I'm loving it!!!  Has anyone had any good or bad experiences running synthetic oil.

I've had both. I ran synthetic in a 300ZX turbo and had weird vibration issues at idle after synthetic, and ran it in another 300ZX turbo with absolutely no problem. The car with the vibration problem never was fixed after that, and the mechanics said it had something to do with synthetic oil and variable valve timing?

Just change your oil every 3000-5000 miles with regular oil; you'll save money and your car will be just fine. My Camry with the same motor you have was absolutely perfect and reliable on plain old conventional oil.

  16. My 94 corolla has a new battery, when I turn the key I get a clicking noise, but the car does not turn over.  Starter???? Where is the starter located on this car.

Also, do you have the factory alarm system on your Corolla? Is it the VIP RS300 system? You might need to try turning the key a few times quickly in the ignition before it starts (5 times, maybe? I can't quite remember...)

  17. Does anyone have information on winter set up?

My girlfriend has a 2005 Corolla LE and the tires are looking pretty tired for winter use - We are near Buffalo, NY and I have always ran winter tires....more specifically winter tires on winter rims.

Her car has factory steel wheels with hub caps, and no online resource that I can find sells a steel wheel / hubcap optioned winter package. How are people dealing with this... using factory purchased (dealer) steels, or going with alloy aftermarkets?

Seems I'd rather use the alloys in summer and the factory steels in winter

But then I have to ship the package (rims/tires) separate and dismount the current set up to switch everything over.

Is anyone running a winter specific set up?

    Thanks

    Jake

The cheapest route is to just buy a set of snow tires, and switch back and forth spring and fall...that's what I used to do in Michigan on both my Camry and my Supra. The easiest way is to buy another set of wheels and tires to switch back and forth, if you really want to spend the money for a nice set of alloys. Check discounttire.com or discounttiredirect.com for deals.

  18. not sure where label is giving the paint code ...info not on drivers door label

    steve

Try the glovebox. It'll be a four digit code close to the top edge of a white label with black letters. It starts with a zero, and then three letters or numbers. Some examples: 0202 = black, 0040 = white, 0051 = pearl white, 03R1 = red 04M9 = light tan. Alternatively, if it's not on the door or the glovebox, your car may have been in an accident.

What year and color is your car? Maybe I'll know the code. Or give me the VIN, and I can look it up.
