  1. Hello all,

Just found this site and am thrilled it exists. Anyone have an idea what specific maintenance goes in the recommended 60K-mile tune-up for the '00 Corolla? I saw someone ask a similar question about an earlier model but mostly focused on the timing belt. I'm wondering if I can just check the rest myself (not a car expert by any means, but I can tell what is what). $400 seems pricey to check fluid levels and belt condition...

    Thanks,

    eanian1

    Check this out:

    http://smg.toyotapartsandservice.com/guide...=2000&int_id=56

It's not just fluids, so the $400 quote you have is pretty reasonable. You may also need to do the timing belt, but it may be okay to wait until 90k.

  2. haa thanks for clearing that up

I was just looking through old posts, and noticed this. There is a way to defeat the system so you can program Navigation while driving (say, if you had a passenger...I'm NOT recommended the driver do this while actually moving).

    Check this out on ClubLexus:

    http://www.clublexus.com/forums/showthread.php?t=167666

Scroll down about 1/2 way, and you'll see how to do it. I've tried it on several different models and years, and it's worked on everything so far.

  3. I took my 2000 automatic 4Runner in for a wash today and one of the workers must have accidentally pushed the shifter into H4L.  I drove a few miles before I noticed the blinking 4x4 light on the dash.  I've tried everything to get it off and it does not seem to go.  I don't think the car is engaged in 4 wheel drive but the light will not go off.  Any ideas?

H4L? You shouldn't be able to go very fast if it's in low. Have you tried making sure it's in 2WD, then backing up 10 feet or so?

  4. If it really feels like a square jack, then put a phone cord in it and see if it snaps into place. If so, it's an RJ-11 or 12. If not, it's an RJ 45.

    Steve,

Everytime I read a post from you like this, it always impresses me. How can you know this stuff...and remember it from an older car like that?

  5. I just reciently purchased a 2003 Corolla CE with less than 10,000 miles on it and it has the same radio proble that you are speaking about.  If you or anyone has resolved this problem, please let me know.  The care was stored for over a year and has the 100,000 mi warranty on the engine and drivetrain  but not on the accessorys.  I will have fix this myself.  Thanks in advance for any help.    Tommy

What's the in-service date on your Corolla? It may still be under warranty for the radio issue, depending on exactly what the problem is.

  6. MSR 18" wheels (sorry not sure of the offset)

    Toyo Proxies 205-40-R18

So far they work perfect with no rubbing, at stock hight. I plan on lowing the car 1.5"-2" either with the TRD springs or a set of Eibachs. Depends on the price mostly. I have heard at that hight there is no problems with rubbing but I'm not sure about going lower.

Be careful when you lower it. If you just add springs, you may get a bouncing effect over bumps or on the highway. You also may not rub on a flat road, but if you hit a bump or a curve at speed, you may get some rubbing...really annoying if you've just spent a few thousand bucks on wheels, tires, suspension..

  7. Can anyone give me a bit more info on this in layman's terms?  My daughter has an '05 Corolla with existing factory keyless entry.  The Toyota dealer tells me that they don't install remote start in that year/model, because "there are problems". They didn't elaborate.  An after-market audio/security shop locally told me they can absolutely do it, but it requires a "hidden key" be kept in the car somewhere, and that the original factory keyless entry fob/system be replaced with the new keyless entry/remote start system.  I was planning to give this installation to her as a Christmas gift, but now I'm not so sure it sounds like something I want to/should do. Any ideas?  Thanks!

    Mark

I think the problems they refer to are because of the chips in the key...the aftermarket shop will take on of your master keys and hide it near the ignition so the car will actually start with the remote start. Without the key in the car, the car thinks someone is breaking in when the remote starter tries to start it, and won't start. If the aftermarket shop is positive they can do it, go ahead...but make sure they've done it successfully on the same model.

  8. Hi;

A friend is giving me her 86 corrolla wagon. Automatic, 241,000km. It failed aircare. Besides a leaking valve cover gasket, I am told it needs a new exhaust, especially the part that starts at the manifold and a new oxygen sensor, a modulator, (what is it and where is it?) and fuel pump. This what they were told by their mechanic.

Any suggestions about possible problems, what to look for?

    thanks herman

Unfortunately, by the time you do all those repairs, you've probably exceeded the value of the car. At this point, you may want to consider donating or selling the car, and finding something in a little better shape. I hate to be the one to tell you that...but you'll probably spend less in the long run.

  9. General Motors is to slash 30,000 blue-collar jobs and close five factories, all in the US -- and lose its coveted position as the world's biggest carmaker in the process.

Following years of over-capacity in the industry, and GM's well-publicised, massive pensions bill, the aim is to cut capacity by 800,000 units to 4.2 million vehicles a year by 2008. The company reckoned that its plants are running at 85 per cent capacity right now, and GM lost $4.1 billion last year in the US alone.

The upshot of GM's loss of capacity is that it's highly likely that Toyota will occupy the symbolically important position as the world's biggest carmaker by next year or 2007. It's the first time for 70 years that GM has not been number 1.

Following the announcement by GM Toyota is quickening its quest to unseat become the world’s biggest automaker with reported plans to start manufacturing up to 100,000 Toyota vehicles at a Subaru factory in Indiana.

Word of Toyota’s ramped-up production schedule comes just days after money-losing GM said it will close 12 facilities by 2008 in a move that will slash the number of vehicles it is able to build in North America by about 1 million a year.

The combined developments could help the Japanese automaker surpass GM in worldwide production, although it’s unclear if that could happen because Detroit-based GM is growing rapidly in Asia.

I forget where I heard this, but someone told me at one point that the folks at Toyota were going to actually raise prices a bit just to help GM out.

  11. Just buy a Broadway mirror, you'll gain precious blind spot space, plus it helps block out the sun in the mornings and evenings. It's only $10-15 on ebay, and bigger the better. I have a 300mm and it's awesome.

Got a link to the Broadway mirrors? I've never heard of it...

  12. well I went and did it.  I called Squires and they made me an offer I couldn't refuse.  I am now in the process of installing.  Have a few bugs to work out with missing parts in the kit and loosely defined instructions.  However, the tech at squires appears eager to help.  Will keep you updated and may also have some questions if anyone can help with answers would be much appreciated.  One hot question I currently have posted on this site is regarding throttle body intake size for 3.4L V6 engines.  Mine is 2 3/4 (outside diameter).  Squires thought it was 3" even.  Therefore I am curious if Toyota used different size throttle body intakes for this engine.

Some basic stuff to remember now that you have a turbo: ALWAYS warm the car up until the RPMs drop, and ALWAYS cool the car down after driving, 1-3 minutes, depending on how hard you drove the car. Your turbo will last much longer that way.

  13. Oddly, the first time I tried panavise.com I got a DNS error, but somebody in another forum posted a link to the search page and that worked. You can get to the main search page for the "InDash" line here.

When you go through, it'll suggest a bracket for the 02-06 Camry, but I believe that's the wrong bracket for the '05 (and probably '06). My dash looks much closer to the one shown for the Solara 04-06 (further down the page).

The warnings about 2-way radios are pretty common. I normally run 5W-10W and on very rare occasions 50W. If the electronics were so poorly designed that such low power would significantly affect them I'd expect problems every time I drove past somebody running a commercial rig. I expect better from Toyota, so if their electronics *were* so poorly designed that a properly installed ham rig caused problems, I'd have to finally start looking at alternate brands. I think this is just a butt-covering clause, just like the one I've heard against auto-starts (like, how could a properly installed auto-start *possibly* fry electronics?).

Yes, I think the Toyota lawyers have struck again. Like the "I promise not to use Navigation while driving button", and why they wouldn't put 17" wheels on a Matrix with a sunroof because it raised the center of gravity by a couple millimeters, etc., etc.

  14. If you've noticed this problem, here's the solution. My son owns a '05 gts which developed a rattle (sounded like a loose washer vibrating on a bolt.). the noise seemed to be coming from behind the glove box. Didn't really notice the noise until about 2500 to 3000 rpm. Anyway, as it turns out the air conditioner lines were transferring engine vibrations into the cabin. The lines run near the passenger shock tower. We put a piece of adhesive backed weather strip between the tower and the lines and this noise vanished. Maybe this will help someone.

Hmmm...I do have a noise like this in my Lexus. Thanks for the tip - I'm going to check this out. Maybe the same rules will apply.....

  15. Tapping (as opposed to push & hold) button at bottom of rear view mirror (2006 Camry XLE) is supposed to turn automatic Anti-Glare feature off & on, according to manual.  Instead, this turns the compass off & on.  Pushing & holding that button cycles compass into Calibration mode, just like it's supposed to.  So how can you turn off anti-glare?  Dealerships and "Customer Experience Line" don't know.  Anyone else have this problem? I'm sure it's same operation on 2005 and even earlier as well.

Are there two buttons by any chance, one less noticeable than the other?

  16. Hello Everyone,

Does anyone know where I can find a custom billet grill (not mesh or glued chrome) to fit my 2003 Solara? (Note this is for a 2003, not the new 2004 model).

Thanks for any help you can provide.

I looked at the places I thought would sell it, but I can only find it for a 2004...sorry, and good luck!

  17. After dueling with the dealer that I pruchased and brought my '03 Camry for service, I found and located the "case of the die-ing batteries" problem MYSELF. As I suspected there was a electrical draw. [Quick lesson to check for a battery draining power (aka "parasidic draw") when the car is off - by disconnecting the negative battery cable from the negative battery terminal, then hooking up a 12 volt bulb between the disconnected negative battery cable and the negative battery terminal with all switches and all electric turned off including the dome light, if there the test bulb is bright, then there is a constant draw from the battery (which there was). If there is only a very dim light, it is normal.] I removed fuses one at a time checking the light bulb each time to see if it dimmed. When I took out the final fuse (isn't always the last one) the test bulb went very dim which is good, almost no draw. That fuse was for the power seats. In checking the seats my son noticed that the power seat button was out of place and jammed in the "on" position! Apparently someone either jammed something between the door and seat or something caused it to break, but there is was - the switch "on" drawing down the battery, even when the key is out! The Bad News, the dealer on Sunrise Highway, in Amityville on Long Island NEVER checked the electrical system or this quick check as they wrote up in the service order and insisted that I buy a replacement battery from them. Friendly advice, do NOT buy from or bring your Toyota for service to a certain Toyota dealer on Sunrise Highway, in Amityville on Long Island, that is near the ATLANTIC ocean

Ouch...thanks for the warning. Any chance it could be a simple mistake, or is this standard operating procedure for them?
