96 Corolla Gas Mileage

The Tornado works. I am running one in my Camry and i picked up 1 or 2 miles per gallon, plus I changed the Iridium plug when I put it in.

Did you pull the fuse out to reset the ECU when you changed it or just disconnect the battery?

I did the same, replaced Oxygen O2 Sensor on the headers, and got 4 - 5 miles per gallon less.

That's strange, I changed out my O2 in front, EGR valve, and VSV, took all three to get the check engine light to go off, but my gas mileage went up by about 4 mpg. Try pulling your egr valve and cleaning it up ( it gets oil and carbon deposits), also pull filters off vsv and see if they have alot of soot and carbon in them, if so you should blow with compressed air and if that doesn't work grab the counter when you pay the dealer for that little peice!

Also might want to consider replacing your fuel filter?

Ok here is my problem, I wanted to gain some HP on my 94 Corolla 1.6L, well I have replaced

1. I have replaced headers because my old ones were about to break on a half, a crack in the middle, I have bought new after market headers from ebay(always bought from there), the inlet for the O2 Sensor was like a screw in, not on bolts, well instead going through the hassle i bought a new Universal O2 Sensor, as a result from getting 250 miles per 10 gallons i got 220, than I have decided for more power install straight pipe 2.25 from the headers all the way to a High Performance Muffler (Cataliter was removed), as a result some HP gain, not alot even though i have COld Air intake. Well now i get 180 miles per 10 gallons, which is driving me insane, when i my moms Buick Park Avenue Ultra 3.8L+Supercharged has 19 miles per gallon, when my little corolla does this. Well the other thing that could happen is my distributer, i have replaced my old because it wouldn't work, and in park i hear my RMP little high which could reflect on my fuel effectivity. Most likely i will buy new Cataliter and weld it in the same place where it was for a quieter ride, no pollutions, and probably may gain my Economy back, WHAT DO YOU GUYS THINK I SHOULD DO? Please help

Tell you the truth Tornado is SCAM, bought 2 od them and installed, no HP again at all, and didn't notice any mileage increase, returned the product back lost 15%, what pissed me off is that tornado was self done, you can simple do it yourself, a sheet of steel or alluminum, cut at 45 degree angles on one side and bend them, roll it like a tube and inset in you intake. Anyways, I disconnected my battery and waited for some time for ECU to reset, by the way I have replaced and installed:

1. Cold Air intake K&H filter

2. Sport Spark Plugs

3. Spark Plugs

4. Ground Kit + Stabilizer

Well I did pick up a bit of a mileage gain with Tornado, but it also may be that I am using it with the K&N air filter. So I did both.

When you removed the cat converter, was there another O2 sensor down there? I have not worked on that year Corolla in some time. And what kind of anti-sieze compound did you use on the front sensor with the new header?

Anti-sieze copound?? what is it? No there was no other O2 sensor on the Cat Converter

You say the new O2 sensor was a screw in type, right? You want to use anti-sieze compound so that the sensor does not get stuck to the exhaust header when that day comes in the future when it goes bad and you have to replace it. Otherwise you may have stripped threads, a damaged header, etc. Theere are a few different types of this compound, but the good type contains copper in it. Copper conducts electricity. You may presently have a ground problem with the new O2 sensor. I would take the cable off of the battery, pull the fuse, unscrew the sensor, reinstall it with copper compound, tighten it up, make sure it's tight, then put everything back together and drive it on the highway long enough for the ECU to reset itself.

Tell you the truth I don't know if i will be keeping this car for long, I love it because i put some much money in it and because its my first car i worked on. Well, soon looking for a bigger engine or new car. Right now i am getting little better mileage with my CAT back on. Reseted my ECU but not sure enough, will take it to a mechanic to get it checked and will purchase an air/fuel gauge to get an idea of whats going on.
