  1. I have a 98 camry I4, and my motor has a timing belt that I replace between 70-90K. Once it gets past 70 i'd regularly check on the belt and look for any signs of excess wear and tear. For me at least I do like to do things early so that I dont have to worry about anything in the back of my head while i'm driving so I just change it at 70K on the dot.
  2. actually i'v seen some ppl that modded their automatic car to a extreme amount. I once found a guy who had a IS300 5speed auto E-shift and turbo'd it past 400 horsepower, that thing was insane

    Odd Start

yeah its been a while lol, i'll call my mechanic see if he agrees. If not i might just take it to my dealer/employer. I actually have a really interesting story. At work the other day we just received a brand new Lexus LS600hL. Only had 2 miles on it. BUT at around 12 miles the check engine light came on and the trans went bust, best guess was a solenoid problem. Toyota told us to take the old tranny off and send it back to them and they'd send a new trans. The mechanic that works on my car was the head mechanic that directed the whole process of taking the whole entire engine/transmission out of a LS600h AWD!! It was honestly a SIGHT TO SEE. That 5.0L V8 w/electric motor and transmission r absolutely massive, it just looked like an engineering marvel, it was amazing.

    Odd Start

well timing belt was replaced along with water pump at 138K all toyota/denso parts. Then the battery was just replaced less then a month ago with a BOSCH battery, would of got optima but didnt hav the cash since i needed the battery asap. Got new denso plugs and wires at 100K. I might try and leave it at my mechanic but the only thing is, hes about 40 minuets away from me and theres no real way bk without a car. I will try seeing any sparks at night, next time i get a chance. So it seems ignition? i also wanted to note, i only see it happen in the cold it never happens when its hot outside. But anyone know any problems this could be a sign of? or is it more of a cosmetic thing?
  7. hey man, i hav a 98 camry as well, how hard was it to put in those new white gauges?

    Odd Start

My 98 camry 2.2L LE has started making a odd sound when I first start the engine. The problem occurs first time i turn it on after its been off for about 12 hours. It seems cold/rain make the problem worse. It sounds like i'm not holding the key in "START" long enough and its JUST turning over with a kind of knock/thud noise. If i hold the key in "START" a tiny bit longer it doesnt seem to occur and starts normally, but its hard to hold it the right amount in fear of holding it too long. It has 154,000 miles on it right now and this has been happening for a while now, just that its getting cold so its more obvious. So far though np starting the car after the initial start so i'm not sure what the culprit could be. My only guess, maybe something is clogged like a fuel filter? or needs a new ignition coil? I really have no clue. My oil change isnt due for another 1,000 miles so I'll hav my mechanic take a look but it'll be hard to replicate the problem since I hav to drive my car there and he wouldn't be able to first hand hear the sound.
  9. I know that the "06 has a governer set to 120MPH, but I was wondering if anyone tried to remove it and see how fast it could really go. 268HP 3.5L VVTi 6speed, i'd imagine a pretty respectable top speed. Heck my old 98 with 2.2L I4 135HP VVT 4speed does 120 lol.

    Inerior lighting

When i took of the knobs for the climate control theres nothing behind them but a white wall and the actual plastic stick that the knob goes on. There were two screws on the white wall, i took them off but it didnt change anything, i tried for a while to find a way to take off the white plastic or just get access to something but no luck, i'll have to go through my fuses and see which one is fused. As for the gear selector, on the instructions posted it points to 4 places to pull on to open up the cover for the gear selector, but i tried as hard as i could and that cover would not even budge. but i'll try again when i hav more time to spend. A theory of mine is that the bulb for the gear selector and the climate control might be connected. For example if my dome light is fused my clock also goes out since they run on the same fuse. So in theory if my climate control runs through the same fuse for my gear selector light then if i replace that bulb it should fix the light for the climate control too right?
  11. I agree it is most likely a belt. My pops had almost the same issue with his RX300. Whenever it was turned on on a cold day it would make a slight hiss/whine that would stay in sync with the engine but within a block or two of driving or after it was warmed up the sound would go away. I never found out exactly what was causing the sound but after we got the timing belt replaced the sound went away completly.

one other thing, what about the climate contorl knobs? As far as i remember i can just pull on them and they come off but are the bulbs in easy access if i just pull the knobs off?

I don't think its the fuse because when i asked my mechanic he said that it was the bulb itself. I saw some vids online for other cars dash/gear selctor removal and it seemed pretty painless, they used screw drivers with cloth covering the tip to pry open the covers then replaced the bulbs. Slyvania has a listing of bulbs under "General purpose dash" that seem to be the ones that would be lighting up the gear selector and climate control. I was going to try and ask my dealer but I know that they charge an arm and a leg even with my employee discount so I wanted to see if I could do it myself.
  16. The lighting for my climate control and gear selector fused out and i was wondering if any1 knew how to change them?
  17. I found out from another camry owner with a 98 and he was able to fit the 00-01 headlight houseings on just fine. But i have another issue, my car has 1 bulb for high/low beams, but the 00-01 camrys have two bulbs one for high and one for low. How would i wire this up with my camry?
  18. I have a 98 camry and I was trying to find some after market head light housings but its impossible to find for my model year. but the 00-01 i'v been able to find plenty. The 00-01 camry and my 98 are the same bodystyle but in 00 toyota gave camry a facelift with new headlights and tail lights. The headlights are very very similar and when looking at them both it seems like it should be able to fit if i bought a 00 housing and put it on my 98 camry. I was wondering if anyone out there ran into the same dilemma as me, or tried to do this. I've seen few ppl cardomain.com with projectors for 98 camrys but i'v never been able to find where they bought them from. Thnx for any advice.

    98 camry weird idle

Weird but the problem went away after a few weeks for me completly. I didn't have anything done to the car but its perfect now.
  20. i've seen doing the oil change every 3,000 miles is the best for a car. Syntheic oils claim oil changes every 5,000 10,000 even 15,000 miles with some of those mobile 1 "endurance" oils. I"ve seen that those claims r based on very certain driving conditions, like the car is driven every day, u use premium fuel, no high reving, no extreme colds/hots climates, theres a myriad of certain conditions they mention in small print when claiming those ultra high mileages for oil changes. I've seen personaly in my vehicle when i used to use normal oil, i could feel a loss of power after 2,000 miles and the car owuld start to get slightly less fuel mileage so changes every 3K was good, i'd usually do it sooner based on how i was driving. Now i switched to mobil 1 syntheic, its great oil makes the car run smooth and have plently of power compared to when i used to use normal oil. I tried once to see how the car handles a oil change at 5K, once it got up to 4K the car started to get significanlty less miles per gallon, no power loss but the car started to give off a certain fume i'v never smelled before, so i immedietly got it changed once i noticed the problem. My advice deff change it at every 3,000 miles. My camry is a work car 100miles per day on a average day, right now it has 141,000 miles on it and it runs perfectly smooth and fuel efficent as the first day i brought it home
  21. When I turn on the car after its been warmed up/driven recently, it will sometimes but not all the time start to idle weird. Normally since its warm/been driven the car will idle at about 750RPM which is has been doing normally eversince i bought the car in 1998. But recently it would go between 750-850 as in literally bounce between those two speeds consistantly, as if i'm tapping on the gas every second. After a minute or so of doing this it completly goes away, or if i shift out of park it will completly go away. The temperature outside when this is happens is usually between 50-60 degrees, and this is happeing right after a harsh winter of a few months of almost everynight being below freezing. It sounds as if the car thinks its too cold to be idleing that low so it tries to idle at a higher level (i'v seen 3 zones of idleing 750 1100 & 1400RPM) then stops and lets off the throttle letting it drop back down to the lowest idle then continuing to try and go to a higher level again. Any ideas of what this is would be very helpful.
  22. toyota sells the DVD disc in the parts at most dealers. I work at a dealer myself and i know that we sell the DVDs for a few hundred dollars. Heres a link to someone selling the north america DVD database for a 05 camry for $60. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/04-05-Toyot...sspagenameZWDVW happy motoring
  23. oo good point, thanks i think i'll take the best buy route then, it sounds like the best way to go
  24. My "98 camry has power locks and when it was purchashed it wasn't purchased with keyless remote entry. I've seen numerous after market kits for just a simple keyless remote entry and I've been wondering if anyone knows how easy this kits are to install? or how to install them. Thanks any feedback is appreciated.
