'99 V6 timing belt change

I have a '99 LE V6 with 94K on it, original timing belt. I loaned it to my nephew for the weekend, now the check engine light is on and it's popping, apparently on one cylinder.

Any suggestions? How hard is it to change the timing belt myself, and should I go ahead and get the valves done or wait till it's running again and see how it does?

It sounds like you don't know much about cars. First of all what do you mean by <popping>? If your timing belt was broken, the engine wouldn't even start. Check your spark plug and wires if it has any. Don't worry about valves for now. You have a toyota, not a GM product. Are you a mechanic?
