jeffbeaux83
I just bought a 2000 Corolla 5-speed and it is getting about 35mpg on the highway. what are some ways i can increase the gas mileage? i was thinking about a k&n stock air filter replacement. are there any other good tips? thanks. i'm new to this forum so i'm not sure how it works. Welcome to TOC! 2000 Corolla are very nice cars. To get even better mileage - there is all the usual things to do. Increase tire pressure, reduce unnecessary weight in your car, etc. As per performance mods to increase mileage - an exhaust frees up the restriction so your engine does not have to work harder, instead of an air filter replacement you can get a SRI which allows the engine to breathe in air easier. Keep in mind by making your engine more efficient, you will tempted to hammer down the accelerator thereby negating your mileage increase. Thanks a lot for the tips, i was wondering if exhaust would improve the mileage, i know that on some newer models a less restrictive exhaust will actually hurt mpg because of the back-pressure. what is a "SRI"? thanks again. Short Ram Intake CAI = Cold Air Intake On the average - a 4 cylinder vehicle can increase the exhaust tubing diameter to 2 1/4 inch diameter - preferably mandrel bent to achieve gains in hp or mileage. Usually any larger of an exhaust diameter would lessen back pressure and cause the engine to "work" harder to push the exhaust gases out. Forced Induction such as S/C (supercharger) or Turbo needs the biggest piping diameter possible as the air is literally "forced" into the engine to creating more power (with the necessary fuel). This is just the basics but I hope you get the idea.
marktaucher
I have a 2003 corolla 5 speed and I average 40 MPG. I drive mostly freeway miles over long distances which helps. I added a high flow K&N air filter, premium spark plugs, and the best thing you can do is buy high quality tires. Anything with an 80 or 90 thousand mile warranty will get you better milage, you can overinflate a little but be careful if you drive in frequent rain or snow. I also have used only synthetic oil since the day I bought the car (Mobil 1 extended life). I currently have 185,000 miles on the car and it still gets this great milage.
