20054runnerguy
hello! never been on a Toyota forum, never thought about it in the 17 years of owning a 4runner. took this long so here i am. a problem i hope a member can help me with. have my 4runner for 17 years and never used the 4 wheel drive. unit froze up and replaced it with a DORMAN made unit. with selector in neutral and engine running turned dial to H4. i get the orange and green indicator on and the orange indicator does not go out where the green is left on to indicate you are in 4 wheel drive. with L4, in neutral turn selector to L4 and lo4 comes on flashing and beeping with VSC off light on as well. the beeping does not stop. turn selector back to H4 the L4 light goes out but, not VSC off. turn selector back to H2 lights go out. i can hear the motor engage under the truck for H 4 but, only a click in dash when put into L4. any one have a answer?? Toyota Owners Club
Crikey! that's a strange one! The only things that come to mind are if anything has changed recently to have invoked this problem? Routine maintenance or recent repairs for example? 20054runnerguy
problem is i never used the 4 wheel drive in the 17 years i have the truck. transfer case actuator replaced with a Dorman unit and now have 4 wheel drive (H4) but orange center lock light is flashing and does not go out. put the truck into 4LO it does not work-------- 4LO light just beeps and flashes. i think the front lock actuator is also froze due to never using it. Toyota Owners Club
4WD does tend to play up if not used and if you can select it then use it off road only to avoid transmission wind-up
Toyota Owners Club
Sometimes, vacuum hoses can also split and sensors can fail which can cause issues. An inspection of components attached to the axles and transfer box would give an indication of what may have failed
20054runnerguy
yes----- i was told by a machanic up the block from me that it could be the front actuator that froze up due to years of not using it or and vac leak or the vac pump.
Toyota Owners Club
Generally sticky 4WD components can loosen up with continued use over time
