My 08 SE with what sounds like the same radio system does not have this display either. NOTE: I have not looked through the manual nor had any reason to expect this feature. Roy

Jason, I purchased an 08 Camry a couple months back and did not receive any notice like this. NOTE: I also did NOT finance through Toyota so this may be the difference. Roy

Char, yes they look the same. What happens is the plastic end that goes in the hole must be compressed to get through the hole on the door handle. Installing the linkage rod expands this plastic out and holds it in place. Then you must rotate the plactic clip to lock it onto the control linkage. Good luck Roy P.S. Try not to force anything to much. Those cheap plastic clips can get REAL expensive both in band aides and more new parts.

Note: I have not done this on a Camry but.... on all the GM products I had to install the plastic keeper into the handle & then insert the linkage. The linkage locks into the handle via the plastic insert. Yes this is real pain since you can't get more than one hand in place and still see what you are doing. Hopefully a Toyota expert will chime in. Roy

Yup $60 and 2-3 days wait. I think I am off to the local aftermartket parts store. I am starting to think the cheapest thing about a Toyota is the Driver :~)

Hi all, Does Toyota offer a cargo net for the 07-08 Camry's? I see hooks but no net. Can anyone recommend an aftermarket version that works well? Just need some thing to help keep the groceries etc. in place. Thanks Roy

Thanks Spudman form spudland Since this is a learning curve for you also. Can you find out if Vol. 1, Service, Maintenance, & Engine covers the majority of DIY projects. I.e. Trans filter and oil. Brake pad replacement if special process required etc. Appreciate the help, and yes I got severe sticker shock also. Probably will wait until Haynes releases a manual in mid to late 08. ex spudman now a FISH (F*cking Illinois Sh*t Head)

Hi Mr. Tercel/Idaho/USA, hopefully you can give me some answers about service manual(s) for the 2008 Camry. I have talked to two different dealers and the Toyota service center and received multiple answers. Question is: is there a single service manual for an owner to purchase or is there multiple manuals that cost around $700 total. Dealer where I purchased the vehicle didn't know and has not given me an answer. NOTE: I have not bugged them either. I Have an 08 SE with the 4-squirrels under the hood. My first guess is to look for vacuum leaks first. A vacuum leak will cause an engine to run at higher RPM's. This leak would have to be down stream of the MAF. Might also explain rough shift since computer may not know thr true engine RPM. (Not sure how the computer monitors engine RPM.) Have done any recent work on this engine? If so look at all of the hoses in the area you were working. Some of these hoses are easy to dislodge or break without even reallizing you damged them. (Don't ask me how I know this) :-( I doubt that injectors or fuel pump would cause this since a typical injector failure is they either start harder or miss. With all of the sensors on cars it is also possible that the TPS (Thottle Position Sensor) may be sticking or starting to fail. Not to common but possible. Also possible corroded conection on a sensor but would not expect this to change sinificantly with temperature. Good luck, as we all know random failures are a real pain in the ass. I had all of the above problems on my old Beemer and symptoms were similar to what you are describing. Roy

I agree with Leigh on this. It does sound like a ignotion or timing problem. Cold/rain might point towards possible connection issue on a sensor? 2: Not sure how the 2.2L is made but is it possible the Timing Belt is slightly stretched causing the timing to advance slightly or change the valve opening. This would potentially cause the knock/thud noise. Can't explain how or why rain would change this though. Cold could be a factor since cold engine turns over harder than warm engine. 3: Weak battery or worn starter? Weak battery in a cold car should just cause the vehicle to turn over slowly or not turn at all. Again not sure if a worn componet on the starter could cause the knock or thud noise. just a couple of thoughts from a shade tree mechanic. Roy

Unless I misread the owners manual, memory seats where an option that is not on this car. I would trade them the stupid Blue tooth BS for some thing that would be a lot more useful. Note: Just my opinion since I don't have a cell phone and think they are just another distraction for drivers. Not sure if what we have would be called a gated shifter: Shift pattern is: Push to the right and pull back one notch is reverse. Pull to left and back on notch is neutral. Pull back another notch is 5th or drive. Pull to left is 4th. pull back is 3rd. Push to the right is 2nd. Pull back is 1st. Once you learn it, it is not that difficult and like you say it will prevent going from 5th to 1st because your toddler grabbed the shifter.

Sorry to say that would only buy two of the five manuals. According to my Stealership there are the four volumes that cover the car and the fifth for the electrical system(s). Total cost around $700. I could not get a complete list of what each volume covered. His suggestion was wait until Haynes, Clymer or Chilton release a manual. Problem is they haven't published a manual for Camry's newer than 05. Since body style changed in 06-07 I would suspect that it will be another few months before the latest version gets released. My bad for buying a new body style I guess. Appreciate the help but the search goes on. Roy

Hi all, after owning an 08 Camry SE for a week here are our thoughts about this vehicle. Pros: Wife loves the looks and handling. Engine and trans are smooth. Can hardly feel the tranny shift. Easier to get in and of than the 2000 Grand Am. I suspect this is because you sit higher in the SE. Power seat: Can be fine tuned for fit but this takes forever to do. (see below) Dash instruments are WELL lit. Looks like the cockpit on a plane. Cons: Power seat; takes forever to adjust from me driving to my wife driving. No illumination on the door controls. I.e. door lock switch, window controls. No illumination for the mirror controls. At night changing drivers this is an issue. No illumination of the center console. I am sure most of the Cons will dissapear in time but these are the initial observations. Funky shift pattern. It seemed like most of the new cars are going with some strange shift pattern. Is there a reason for this? Safety, looks, cause they can, etc...

I looked the TIS system but at $50 for a month or $350 year seemed kind of steep especially when I don't have internet access in my garage. If I keep the vehicle for ten years at $350/yr I could hardly justify the expense unless I had to do some major repairs and at that point the car would be gone. Not familiar with alldata but the same problem applies with no internet access. Does anyone know why there are four volumes for the 07 Camry?

Hi all, is there a source for a service manual other than the Toyota manual volumes 1 - 4. I have performed a search for Haynes & Clymer but neither of them show having a manual for the 06 or newer Camry. I don't need one yet but the day will come and would like to be prepared. Thanks Roy

Is it possible to add spell check as an option for US spelling challenged fat fingered oafs? I am not sure how they do it on the BMWLT site but it sure is a nice feature. Yes it is an 08 Camry SE with four "Rice Eating Squirrels" Yup, better start buidling a "How To" section since I am a die hard shade tree mechanic, busted knuckles, bruised ego and all I suspect it is a combination of engine and exhaust coatings being cooked off. As Murphys law is still alive and well, we drove less than ten miles before it started to rain. This seems to have helped wash some of the oils etc off smell is pretty much gone at 120 miles.

Steve, since I am new to Toyoa models I do not know if a 98 has electonic shift or mechanical. I willing to wager that it is electronic and there is a valve sticking in your tranny. The longer you run it this way the more damage will be done to the clutches etc.. Part of this is based on the fact that you say it shifts fine going forward in drive. I would take it to a good tranny repair shop. May be simple and inexpensive depending on IF my assumptions are correct. I am not sure how accesable the valves are. Leighcm, don't have a digital camera so will have to borrow a friends to take pictures of the new Rice Grinder :D Must have been used for the bleached Rice since it is white :D thanks for all of the help... Leighcm, just so there is limited confusion on my aprt and possibly others. Before VVT VALVE timing or opening was not adjustable. Engine Ignition Timing has and probably always will be adjusted. I don't want some one getting Valve and Ignition timing mixed up. Roy

Well as newbie I have asked a few questions and now am going to attempt to negotiate a deal on an 08 SE. May have SE in the garage tonight IF work doesn't get in the way. Warning; If I buy one I am sure I will have some technical "how to" questions :D As a side note, how long has the 2.4 Liter had the VVT option on it? I know from research the 2.4 has been out for several years but i couldn't find a source showing when the VVT was introduced. Thanks Roy

Leighcm, you are correct the 2.4 has a chain. Also for those shopping the new 3.5 Liter V6 also has a timing chain Vs the belt on the 3.3 Liter. This information is per the dealer I am negotiating with.

Leighcm, I plan on making an offer on the SE tonight IF work doesn't get in the way. Wife really liked the looks and handling Vs the Solara. To her the Solara was to "Plain Jane" NOTE: Solara was an 07 but the 08 didn't look any different to me. Side note: Shift pattern will take some getting used to Vs the Grand Am. thanks Roy

Hi all, as newbie and in the process of shopping for a 07 or 08 Camry I have the question of does the 2.4 , 4 cylinder have a timing belt? I did a search and it appears that tere was on the 2.2 but saw no reference to the 2.4. I looked last night and my best guess is no on the 4 cylinder ans yes on the 6 cylinder. If yes on either, are these interference engines where a broken belt typically means severe engine damage? Model most interested in 08 SE with 2.4. Thanks Roy AKA old n slo
