98 Camry LE - dashboard removal

i recently bought one of those GPS devices that you mount to the windshield, and it has this thick black cord (which is really too long for it's own good to begin with), and since i already have a RoadTrip that holds my iPod in place, I had to go out to radio shack and buy a splitter so I could have them both plugged in at the same time. it works, however it's only a temporary solution - the splitter makes the outlets stick out a good inch and a half from the dash, making the raodtrip impossible to mount properly, and the GPS plug gets in the way of the shifter, forcing me to unplug it before shifting into park.

I have a theoretical solution - my boss at wok also has a GPS mounted on his windshield, and has its cord tucked under the dash close to the windshield (dropped down behind), and then plugged in somewhere behind the dash. it looks very neat, as now the only cord that is showing is a little hjalf foot long piece going from the unit to the windshield.

I'm wondering how I would go about taking off the dash to tuck the wire behind it, and then wire it in somewhere behind to not only free up the outlet, but also to greatly reduce the clutter hanging over my stereo. i think it would be easy enough to wire in another cigarette lighter behind the original one (they sell singles ready to go at RadioShack), but i'm still left with the problem of how to place the wire behind the dash and get the stereo covers off. any insight would be wonderful. ;)

hah. yeah. i actually talked to my boss about it a little earlier today and that's exactly what he did.

he just ran the wire along the windshield down to the steering column and wired a new cigarette outlet there. he put the fuse near the battery and strung it together with some 14-2 and a few zip-ties. easy job. i'm just surprised that when i mentioned it to my buddy the other day in his garage (we were replacing my tranny fluid) that he automatically jumped to the conclusion that i'd have to pull off the whole dash too... his only other suggestion was to duct tape the wire around and through the glove box... :P
