patcal
Ok, I am paranoid. The only other car I ever had a head gasket fail was a 84 Corolla. Now my 90 is running above the middle. I have changed the thermostat with a Toyota stock thermostat, coolant and radiator cap. I am still running at the middle or a little above. My fan comes on right at 199F which is what it is supposed to do. Is this normal? Should I worry about this? All the cars I have had in the past, the gauge runs right at the middle. Also, never had a car run the fan so much. There is no sign of a blown head gasket that I can tell. So am I just being paranoid? Pat Callaghan 90 Corolla DX Portland, OR. humanoid
It's normal, overheating is when smoke/steam is pouring out of the engine compartment. When I had my Tacoma, it ran a little above middle for its whole life. Just make sure you flush the coolant out every 2 years or 30K miles and you'll be fine. patcal
I am not getting any of that. Thanks. Pat It's normal, overheating is when smoke/steam is pouring out of the engine compartment. patcal
Now that the temp here in Portland has gotten into the high 70s, low 80s, my car is running even warmer. It was pinging yesterday and the fan ran almost constantly on the way home from work. Still no coolant loss or any other sign of bad things happening. Needle running about 10:00 on the gauge. Maybe a little more. This is just too warm for my tastes. It is going to get into the mid 80s to 90s before long. How can I determine of my radiator or water pump are OK? I am ready to just replace the radiator but I do not want to just throw money at the problem as I do not have a lot.

Some things you might want to look for: does it run cooler when you're consistently moving, like at highway speeds, and then warm up significantly when you drive in the city (stop & go traffic)? Do you smell coolant at all?
