We just bought a 2006 Highlander Hybrid and would like some information how to go about the brake-in period as well as other things I need to about this wonderful vehicle. Break-in: for the first 800-1000 miles, just try to keep your speeds down a little (under about 60 is good), remember to vary your speeds, and don't do any sudden acceleration or braking if avoidable. Also, your break-in will not actually be completed for several thousand miles, so you may not see your true mileage until 5,000 or so mileage. After that, watch the screen carefully, and it will help you to attain the best mileage. You will also get better mileage during nice weather (not too hot, not too cold) because you'll be running less accessories like a/c, heater, etc. A couple of ideas: If you're running several errands, go to the furthest area location first and work your way back. This will give the car time to warm up and will help you to get better mileage throughout the trip. Keep excess items inside the car to a minimum...ie, do you really need to keep the lawnchairs in the back for more than just the trip you used them for? Here's some basic rules: 1.Plan ahead. Combine short trips in order to minimize cold starts.2.Accelerate slowly.3.Avoid heavy braking. Monitor traffic to minimize braking and coast whenever possible.4.Avoid speeds in excess of 60 mph. Fuel economy suffers at speeds higher than 60 mph and drops significantly above 70 mph.5.In slow-and-go traffic, accelerate to the desired speed, then lift off the accelerator pedal, allowing the vehicle to run more on electric power.6.Ensure tires are at the recommended pressure.7.Avoid carrying unnecessary loads. Extra weight reduces fuel economy.8.Use the air conditioner and the defroster only when needed.9.Use premium fuel to improve fuel economy and performance.10.Use the "D" gear position rather than "B" position.
