kmberger
I have a Toyota Camry LE MY 2000. It has 104,000+ miles on it and it generally in very good condition. Recently I had one of the 3 oxygen sensors replaced as the check lamp came on and diagnostics supposedly showed that the sensor (the one for the exhaust was dead as a doornail. About a week later the check engine light came on again, this time my Toyota dealership ran the diagnostic check for free and said that the Speed Sensor ID showed up on the diagnostics, but since the check lamp was intermittently going on and off, the recommendation was that I could still drive on it. Well in this sudden cold spell in the South, the check lamp came on again. A friend of mine who owns an Avalon said that this kind of problem may be electrical in nature. He suggested I check to see if my gas cap was on tight (which it was) and then unplug the battery cables and then replug them. If the check engine lamp does not come back on, then this is a problem with the computer system itself (ack, a more expensive repair). Well, sure enough the check engine lamp did go out, but 3 days later it came back on again. I'm going to disconnect the battery cables again and see if that resolves the matter any longer than 3 days. If not it's back to the dealership. DOES ANYONE KNOW IF THIS IS A SYSTEMIC ISSUE FOR THE TOYOTA CAMRY/AVALON ECU UNITS? IS THERE ANY KNOWN "PERMANENT" COUNTERMEASURE FOR THIS??? I WOULD GREATLY APPRECIATE SOME WISE COUNSEL FROM CLUB MEMBERS. THANK YOU KINDLY. Cheers, Kerry
kmr
My advice is to go your local auto parts store and see if they can read what codes are being stored. Most of the big parts stores will do this for free for you. Just a side note, the check engine light will go on for the oxygen sensor if your battery is getting weak. You may want to get your battery checked out since you say the problem got worse when it got colder out- weak batteries don't like colder weather. Good luck! Complete_TRD
I study in mechanics. And I'll tell you one word : relay. It is probably a bad connection in the relay box... OR : You will have to change you spark plugs, they are making misfires. As a result of all that, the check engine light turn on and off! Does it smell gas? good luck!
