Trans shift won't release from park when brake depressed

Anybody familiar with how to fix this? The automatic transmission shifter won't go from park when the brake is depressed. Also, brake lights don't work. I assume they are related. I also assume the problem in under the dash or shifter areas rather than near the back lights. I have to depress the shifter release button to shift out of park. The brake switch is OK - already replaced. Old one was OK. Fuses by left leg and under hood are OK. Thanks for any help.
