jen in co
We have a Highlander from the first year (2002) and I was wondering if anyone knew if it was possible to disable the front passenger airbags? We have Kindergartener and a toddler and are starting to carpool and I'd like to have the option of having my older child ride in the front occasionally, but only if I can disable the airbag. With my toddler's carseat (gigantic britax), we can only get one additional car seat/booster in the back.
Leighcm
You can't manually disable the airbags, but I think (not positive) that there is a weight limit for the passenger airbag in your car. In many of the Toyota products, there's a sensor in the seat that turns the airbag off if there's no weight in it so that there's potentially less damage to the interior of the car in the event of an accident. For example, I think the weight limit in my car is around 35 pounds. You may have a little light saying if the passenger airbag is on or off? As far as actually disabling the airbags, you won't be able to find anyone to do that. It's a huge liability concern. If you really must put the toddler in the front, please make sure you put the seat as far back as possible from the dash and make sure the belt is very secure.
