Wonder what fair price is in northern CA for an independent shop to replace timing belt and water pump. and should I have the serpentine belt replaced as well, and then what is fair price? This car has 178K miles on it, no past major problems reported by seller, but needs 'hydraulic pump' (?) (power steering) replaced since tires were replaced recently. any response appreciated... regards ddnorm

My 1997 1.6L Corolla with about 180K miles developed a severe oil leak. I topped off the oil and was driving it to the shop. The oil light had not come on (not that low) when the engine developed a knocking sound. I immediately stopped & called for a tow. The shop has located & repaired the oil leak, but has only told me that a "rod is bent" and their specialized service technician will check it out today. Any ideas what I might expect? What questions should I ask? How much could various repairs run? I can't buy another car at this point. My finances are EXTREMELY limited. I need to make a cost effective, affordable choice. Any suggestions are welcome. I've been getting about 25 mpg, so compression is apparently good. While they are repairing the "bent rod" should I have them replace the timing belt as preventive maintenance? Would that save on labor costs, since they will already be opening the engine?

Hi All, Just a quick question...I hope. I have recently purchased a Toyota Highlander 2005, it is the V6 model and the type of engine is 3MZ-FE, 6 cylinder V type 4 cycle. I can confirm it is a VVT-i. I don't have a lot of mechanical experience or knowledge but I have been trying to figure out if this engine is an interference engine or not. I have been looking around for the information but it doesn't seem like there is a consensus, but rather quite a few conflicting information. Is the engine an interference or not? Any ideas? Thanks very much in advance. Sakis
