No rule of thumb, just don't go so cheap that the hubcabs won't stay on!
You should be able to find hubcabs at lots of places: AutoZone, Pepboys, Walmart, Meijers, maybe even Target.
AARRRGGHHHHHH....
All those responses an no one begs him to get rims.....
GET RIMS!

I just bought a '96 Corolla from friends. Does anyone know of a terrific mechanic in the West L.A./Santa Monica area? The previous owners maintained this car scrupulously primarily at Hollywood Toyota.
Thanks for any advice!
Can't help ya, I'm in oregon... But had to reply. I've just gotten the same make, AWESOME CONDITION. Nice ride, eh?? Mine's the deep red, yours??
Keep me up on what mods you do.... curious where i should start.
Also, Maybe you should ask this on the gen chat area? I notice low response within the corolla area for stuff like this.

I used to have the same car. I got it from a dealer as a salesman's used car, very low mileage
but it had a broken antenna. So I had to snake an entire new antenna assembly through the thing. I didn't have
any clearance problems....even though the area was quite small. Has the car been in a collision?
NOPE! It's perfect... absolutely the best used car i've ever owned.
The problem i speak of is the heater vent is RIGHT behind the stereo area.... leaves very little room.
-
Has anyone else noticed that the area for the stereo in the dash is _REALLY_ small? I think that my sony deck's antenna wire is being pinched and have no clue how to get the deck to fit properly.

Manual transmissions are a bit controversial when it comes to remote starts. Some places will do it, many won't....too much potential for liability issues. For example, if a manual transmission happened to be in gear when the car was started with the remote, there's a chance it could take off.
I love my car too much to ever force it to stay with me. If she wishes to leave me... i'd allow it.
(LOL!!)

I love this site......

I want to remove the 'corolla' and 'DX' from my rear.... anyone got a good tip on how to safely do it? I heard that floss works... but have no clue how to go about doing it.
-
are you talking keyless entry, or full keyless entry, starting etc?
Minimum of entry... but remote start would rock. Can you do that with a manual??
-
Yeah, this is the place...
and feel free to start one off ;)
OK THEN, WHO IN OREGON WANTS TO GO OR A DRIVE?!?!?!?
-
Well, so far, as with my former Toy products in the past I have had very good luck with the Haynes manuals.
So you have a 1996 Corolla? Not too long ago I got rid of the factory service manual. I tried to give it away on the board, but ended up selling it on EBAY because for some unknown reason I could find no taker for it. Sounds like you would have been the likely recipient.
I may have some scans from that manual on the hard drive of my server. I'll take a look and see.
OMG! Sounds awesome... yes, Please check?!? TY!!!

The Toyota system isn't cheap. It's probably the highest quality and most reliable system, but it isn't cheap. Have it done at a stereo shop...it'll be maybe $100 or so for just keyless (assuming you have power locks, of course) and it'll be relatively painless.
I was thinking of more of doing it myself.. anyone ever try??

What's the best book to buy for general info about my car, Haynes, Chilton, Or another i don't know about??
I plan to pick up asap.... also, wasn't sure if there is anything online for this new owner.....????????

I am looking to put keyless into my baby... easy to do myself? Cheap? I have no clue where to begin, Nor if ebay/doing it myself is possible....

I'm just curious if anyone knows how to remove the cover for the radio and take the radio out without damageing the frame?
I used the biggest flat spatula i could find.. it'll pop, Don't be afraid of hurting it. Do be afraid of damage to the dash though... thus the big spatula.

Is there a trick to attaching files, I'd like to show the damage to you guys.

I had a friend modify his jeep's driver seat in a simular fashion. He went as far as even welding the seat in the correct spot and being ENTIRELY happy. Then, A cop pulled him over and impounded the car, saying that the modification of the seat endangered the driver and that the altering of the seat was intirely illegal. Vehicle was named unsafe.
Mind you, this was in oregon... we've got wierd cops here.

Hey there-
After taking out the screws, pull out all the knobs from your climate control, There should be four of them. You need to put a srewdriver type tool, from the top, above your stock radio and pry out the plastic that goes all the way around the stock radio and houses the air vents. (I used painters spatulla, the kind used for laying down spackling paste on walls.) kinda like this one: http://home.ripway.com/2004-12/224004/template/spackle.JPG A screwdriver wil leave dents in your dash that wont come out, the larger area of the spackling tool fixes the problem.
The molded plastic you will be prying off is stuck in there good. So pry hard, and dont fear of breaking it.
As you pry it off, the A/C button will pop out with it, unplug that and set the plastic aside.
The Radio will have four hex srews around it, use either a screwdriver or a hex bit. Carefull pulling them out, because they may fall behind the dash and then your S.O.L.
Once all screws have been taken out, pull out the radio and disconnect all the wires out from behind it. Also unscrew the brackets that are to the left and right of the radio. Youll need these brackets for later, dont worry about mixing them up they are labeled "L" and "R". Some aftermarket Radios, have screw holes on the left and right sides that match up perfectly with these brackets.
Put in new radio following these instructions in reverse, (using an aftermarket radio harness like this: http://store.yahoo.com/mobile-emotions/19totw1.html) and your set!

RUH RUH RUH, That's alot better.
I do have to say, though.... I parked next to a sister to my car, same color and etc without mods. Looked lonely. Anyways... when i was coming out of the store i could have sworn it had rims. From a distance the "nice" caps it had did look like rims.
I will point out it was fom about 90 feet and i was on good pain meds.....
Get rims, It's my new obsession.
