When my 2004 Corolla starts the engine, revs to about 2000 RPMs. If still cold, the idle drops to about 1800 and stays there until the engine starts to warm. IF the engine is warm the idle drops to a normal 700 RPM.
I have been told by the dealer that this is the correct operation for the engine. Emails, which I have received from the Toyota web site, say the it is "not unusual for Corollas to run with high cold RPM". This statement implies is that not all Corollas idle at high RPMs.
My problem is that, just at start up, there is no oil pressure and the oil has drained from the engine. It takes a few seconds for the engine oil to circulate. I think that running at 1800 to 2000 RPMs is racing the engine and that the engine is being damaged. In the first few seconds of running, the bearings are running without an adequate supply of oil or oil pressure.
Is anyone else having this experience? What do other owners on this forum see as cold idle RPMs?
Thanks
that is normal for all newer corollas. there is enough oil left on bearings to prevent any damage. just make sure to change your oil every 3000 miles

throttle body/plate gets carbon on it and reduces the amount of air getting to the engine. this causes the engine to be lean. get intake cleaner and spray throttle plate. don't be afraid of using to much the more the better and wipe the plate with a rag or old toothbrush. when spraying hold the throttle open to get the inside part of the plate. a gunked up throttle plate will affect idle. a lean condition will cause a low idle. throttle postion has everything to do with idle ecspecialy cold. electronic throttle is not affected by carbon nearly as much as cable control.Breather hose, EVAP purge hose, vacuum hose, idle air control valve.I doubt about throttle plate, cuz my throttle is gunked up. It only affects gas pedal response after a heavy load, when alot of vacuum is created. It doesn't have anything to do with "cold" idle. Unless throttle is electronicaly controlled (with stepper motor).
I don't think it could be fuel system, but you could check fuel pressure, just in case.. If injectors or ignition system are bad DTC (misfire) will be generated.

the ecm stops the engine from shifting into overdrive when cold to warm up the engine faster. this normal.
