Immobilizer Problem

I bought a 1997 Toyota 4 Runner without the remote control that activates/deactivtes the anti-theft system (Immobilizer). This wan't a problem because the system wasn't active. However, after major engine repairs, it seems the system has become activated, i.e. the car starts but the engine cuts off after 20-30 seconds.

Does anyone know of a solution, e.g. how to get a new control, a schematic of the anti-theft system, or other remedy.

Thanks much,

James

If it's a factory installed system, you can get a new remote from any Toyota dealer for about $50-60 and program it to your car.

It seems like there was something with those old alarms that you could get in the car, turn the key to accessory and back 5 times, and it would deactivate the alarm and engine kill switch.
