2017 highlander gas range off by 50%. Toyota says there is nothing they can do. Anyone else seeing this kind of discrepancy?

I was recently planning a trip with my 2017 highlander with most of the gas stations on the east cost out of gas.  So I needed to rely on the range indication to plan the trip.  With a full tank it was saying the range was only 250 miles.  Based on the tank size of 19.2 Gal and my actual MPG of 26.3 I should easily get 450 miles.  I thought as I started out on the 400 mile all hwy trip that the range indication wound start to adjust itself but it did not.  It continues to fall during the trip.  After 200 miles I had only used 6.6 gals.  I topped off and the range now indicated 283 miles.  Again after 200 miles of all hwy driving I had only used 1/4 tank again.  Bottom line is the range indication is way way off.  My dealer and Toyota is saying there is nothing they can do.  My question is anyone else seeing this kind of discrepancy?  All my other vehicles with a range indication are much more accurate.

We have the 2019 highlander Limited AWD, and the MPG thing is skewed. Seems to me my mileage has gotten worse since the recalled fuel pump was replaced! (??) A week or two ago we drove the Interstate (35miles) and mpg dropped? A few days ago I reset the mpg and did some in town driving and it was reading 12.3 mpg. went through a drive thru fast food place an while ordering and picking up the order the mpg's actually reversed to 10.7!! Baffled!

That seems pretty terrible, but it might just be the kind of driving you were doing at the time. Idling in a drive through will bring your MPG down, because your are getting 0 MPG. We were typically hitting 18 MPG with all city driving on a 2018 Limited AWD.

Only way to know for sure is to calculate it yourself. Reset the trip meter next time you fill up. At the fillup after that, divide the number of miles driven by the gallons you put in the tank.

Fuel pump should not matter, because the fuel injectors normally have a set PSI they pump out fuel into the cylinder.

If you think of it like a kitchen sink, fuel pump just makes sure you have enough pressure to release the water. Injectors are like the handle that regulate the amount. The ECU should adjust the flow to make sure you are not running to rich (too much fuel).

Change oil, change air filter, check tire pressure. All easy ways to improve fuel economy.
