North HIghlander
The new model Highlander (2020 & 2021) with top trim levels LTD and Platinum are not able to have a hitch installed as it interferes with the remote foot switch sensor that activates the rear hatch door. This sensor was introduced in 2020. So, you now have a vehicle advertised with a 5000 lbs. towing capacity with no way of using this feature. I have been told by a sales person that they could deactivate the sensor and go ahead and install the hitch (which, by the way, is an option on all other trim levels). Having work in Engineering & Design in my past, I'm keenly aware that such a change performed without a thorough software review is risky. Deactivating a sensor in such a complex inter-connected computer program may inadvertently cause glitches in other areas under scenarios not easily thought up. Has anyone investigated this with Toyota and heard whether deactivating the foot sensor is acceptable?
