A 2001 Celica could possibly be still under powertrain warranty, depending on exactly when your in-service date was. Most likely, a check engine light is for a powertrain issue, so definitely take it to a Toyota dealer first.

One thought: the most common cause of a check engine light in newer-model Toyota products is because people don't completely close the gas cap. Did the light come on shortly after getting fuel? Make sure you always click the gas cap closed at least two or three clicks when you close to be sure this doesn't happen.
