Check engine light

I have owned my 2001 Rav4 for several years. I purchased it from my son. While he owned it, the car was in a front collision while at a stop light. It did not deploy the air bags. When turning on the ignition, the air bag light goes through the normal checks, then goes off. The check engine light has been on as long as I have owned it. While in a shop recently, I have them search for the code causing the light to be on. They did not find any engine code. However, in what they called a complete scan, they found an error code for the left front air bag sensor. This shop did not know the meaning of that. I have found that the left air bag sensor is not mounted with both bolts and is easily shaken. My question is; can the loose mounting of the sensor cause the error code and can that sensor code cause the check engine light to be on.

Thanks

Gordy
