Ried
Hi Folks We just purchased a used Highlander 2005, it says Four wheel drive on the back and has a button by the shifter that says ECT snow. Our problem is there is no info in our owners manual as to how to put the vehicle in 4X4, what speed can the ECT button be used, just how good of a 4x4 is this, mostly just snow and ice or off road use too. Thanks for your help, Ron
Leighcm
It's not a traditional 4WD system, it's an AWD system...it automatically sends power to whichever wheel needs it. There's never a button to switch into AWD from FWD. It can handle snow, and a small degree of off road usage. The Highlander is built on a car platform (very similar to Camry, Sienna, Lexus RX), so it is not built like a heavy duty 4x4 truck. If you want to go off road, you need a 4Runner or similar. As for the snow button: basically, it makes it so you have less power and torque which is helpful in trying to get out of snow and ice. It has nothing to do with the AWD system.
