El Coco
Newbie here... Just bought a 2006 Avalon with 700 miles. The nav system is a pain to work with. While scrolling to enter destination, suddenly it selects enter without even selecting a letter. The POI is very limited. For example nearby there's a Staples, Home Depot, Lowes, Walmart, etc and it's not even registered. Is there a way to upgrade the software? The interface is also flaky. Is there anyone else having these same issues? Thanks
Leighcm
yes...updates available at your Toyota dealer. $200-300 + installation. If you're slightly mechancally inclined, install it yourself.
El Coco
Thanks for the info. Now, is the upgrade you're talking about a map update or software upgrade. I currently purchased and installed (inserted the DVD) of version 7.1 map update Gen 2/3. Thanks, El Coco
Leighcm
That's as good as it gets...you have the latest and greatest. Occasionally, there's an actual defect in the Nav system. I suggest you spend a little more time with car, and find out if it's the system, or just you getting used to it, and then take it in to Toyota if the problem persists. The nav system should be under warranty until 3 years/36k.

techietennis
How do you get hold of the update CD and install it into the Nav system. It is frustrating driving on roads that have been in place for 5 years yet does not exist on the Nav maps.

They probably have the new disc in stock. Toyota issues a new disc just about every year. It'll be a couple hundred bucks. You can probably find them on eBay, etc., but I'd be a little wary of a non-OEM disc. I'm not sure where you install the disc in your model, but some typical places in other models are behind the nav screen, in the glovebox, or a module in the trunk. If you can figure out where the module is, it's an easy install, maybe all of 5 minutes: turn on the car, take out the old disc, put in the new disc, wait until the screen says it's done loading. Simple. If you're nervous about messing around with the software, have the Toyota guys do it. You'll probably get charged an hour labor though.
