2008 Prius Touring With "Issues" Needing Toyota Attention

:o I purchased a 2008 Prius Touring Pkg. 6. With GBS, and Rear Bumper Applique. Dec. 1st.

Issue No.1.Ordered D.R.L. and Auto Headlights BUT DID NOT GET EITHER?

TOYOTA CUSTOMER CARE SAYS; NEITHER FEATURE IS AVAILABLE IN THE US?

Issue No 2. Auto Door Locks OWNERS MANUAL SAYS THEY ARE AUTOMATIC AND

ARE CUSTOMIZABLE. TOYOTA SAYS; ALTHOUGH LISTED IN OWNERS MANUAL,

AUTOLOCK FEATURE IS NOT OPERABLE OR CUSTOMIZEABLE?

THIS IS A HORRIFIC SAFETY ISSUE AND A "CARJACKERS DREAM COME TRUE"

If You Forget To Use The Armrest Lock Button, ANYONE CAN OPEN ANY DOOR!

Issue No 3. Navigation System DOES NOT RECOGNIZE MY STREET

OR MY HOUSE ADDRESS. TOYOTA SAYS; WE HAVE CONTACTED THE MANUFACTURER,

AS SOON AS A SYSTEM UPDATE IS AVAILABLE YOU WILL BE CONTACTED.

WHAT? THIS IS A 2008. THE SUBDIVISION STREETS HAVE BEEN HERE 15 YEARS.

THIS TOYOTA NAV. SYSTEM IS UNABLE TO RECOGNIZE MY HOUSE NO. OR STREET?

SOMETHING IS VERY WRONG HERE?

Is There Anyone Else Experiencing Any Of These Type Of Problems?

I must Admit To Being A Bit "Disallusioned" With These "Shortcomings" From Toyota!

The Prius Otherwise Is Just Great. MPG is Phoenominal Compared to my Old SUV.

A couple questions:

1.) If you have the headlights on, and you turn off the car and open the driver's door, do your lights turn off?

2.) Do you live on a private road?

3.) By "auto door locks", do you mean the ones that lock when you turn the car on or when you shift into drive?

1. Yes They Do. I Guess That's About As Automatic As One Could Imagine Having!

2. No. This is an established existing subdivison that has been here for 15 years with all of the streets platted out back then when the subdivision was created. :o

3. According to the 2008 Owners Manual They Are Supposed To Automatically Lock When Put In Drive. They are ALSO

Supposed to be Customizeable with a setting to have them lock at 15MPH. Mine DO NOT EVER AUTO LOCK! The only way to lock all the doors is by using the door lock button on the drivers or passenger door. Plus at the dealership, when the Toyota District Field Tech. Specialist hooked up his computer to my system, the Screen DID NOT SHOW ANY LIVE LINKS to perform any adjustments to! I consider this to be a 1st. Class Safety Hazard, and a "Carjackers Dream Come True"!

Toyota's Customer Care People Called and told me, "Although this feature is listed in your 2008 owners manual, the car cannot auto lock the doors when the transmission is put in any position other than "P". and is also not customizeable either!"

That's probably as good as it gets on the headlamps...but fortunately, it's easy and you don't have to think about turning them off/on.

Navigation: yeah, it's all when Navteq gets your road mapped. You can request an update here:

http://mapreporter.navteq.com/dur-web-exte...amp;language=en

With luck, the next map DVD could have your road. I've found that some of the data can be a little sketchy in subdivisions, private roads, so that's why I asked.

As for the locks: I'm shocked that you can't program your locks. Most of the mid-high end Toyotas have had that programming available (but not publicized) for about the last 10 years. Did you ask your dealer? Let me do a little research on that...it's called CBEST.

Okay, this is for a Sequoia, but it should at least get you headed in the right direction:

You could also try asking the dealer about CBEST. I'm not POSITIVE your Prius has it, but it seems odd that it wouldn't. Camrys, Avalons, Solaras, etc. have it.

Thanks Much For The Nav Info. I went to the site and filed a report on my street not being even listed. A 2008 go figure?

The lights, well I just leave them all on now, and when I open my door at the end of a trip, they go out. No real problem.

The locks, yeah they even sent out a "Toyota Tech Specialist" to my dealership to check on the so called autolock system. BUT The tech and Toyota told me the feature, although listed in the owners manual, IS NOT on any of the 2008 Prius Cars.

The Tech was nice enough to even hook his computer up to a just arrived 2008 Prius to show me that it doesn't work.

Apparently it was going to be, but somewhere along the line the decision to cancel it out was made? Why, who knows?

It does not work, and is never gonna work, so I just havta remember to use the armrest button or buy the coastaletech fix.

Thanks Again For Your Help, and do let me know if you find out anything more about the autolock system? Regards, Robert

Bummer on the locks...I did spend quite a bit of time looking around today, but couldn't find much.

New nav discs come out once a year or so, so maybe the upgrade will have your house! One thing to consider if you're worried about security: programming your house into your Home "speed dial" is an incredibly easy way to send a car thief right to your home address.

Hi Leighcm; I am not familiar with CBEST? Would you mind explaining what it is/does to me?

Thanks, Robert

IF your car has it, it's "Customized Body Electronics". Basically, it means you can change the programming on some things. For example, you could change the power locks to lock when you turn the car on, or when you shift into drive, or only when you hit the lock button.

Thanks for the info. Not sure if I have CBEST or not. I do have the "smart key with alarm" How does one make changes?

Using the remote Buton, or some other way?

IF your car has it (and apparently that's a big "IF" with Prius'), try the directions for the Sequoia. I don't have the exact directions for a Prius, unfortunately.

Hi Leighcm; Well I tried the auto lock directions last nite but alas, it was to no avail. They still so not auto lock! It never went thru the full lock unlock sequence. So I will just get the coastal etech "fix" that just plugs in. Thanks for your help.

Darn...that would've saved you a few bucks if it had worked. Let us know how the Coasteltech product works out.

While I am firing questions about. Do you or does anyone else in the group know how to EASILY change the alarm settings?

I would like for the horn to beep, not just that "little peep" sound it makes now?

Many Thanks, Robert

02/05/2008 UPDATE FROM TOYOTA CUSTOMER CARE? NO, NOT REALLY

A supervisor just contacted me today, and had the audacity to tell me "while it is unfortunate you are experiencing difficulties with your Factory Navigation System, (yeah like it doesn't know my home street address, so it can't give me turn by turn directions anywhere) Toyota WILL NOT Make Update Discs available to you FREE. Update discs are 'customer pay' items".

Well Know, So What Do You All Think of That, So much for Toyota Quality & Customer Care?

 It is obvious to me that the money I paid for this Navigation System, WAS A COMPLETE WASTE, AS TOYOTA HAS NO INTENTION OF GIVING ME EVEN ONE LOUSY UPDATE DISC!

So if you are gonna get a Prius DON'T BOTHER GETTING THE NAVIGATION SYSTEM!

It is interesting to also note that while my wife was at Office Depot, she input our home street address into both a Tom Tom, and a Magellon Nav. System and both accepted the address and gave her turn by turn navigation to our home, with no problem at all.

Do yourselves a favor and Save Money, BUY THE AFTERMARKET NAVIGATION SYSTEMS!

I genuinely feel "just so violated" of being ripped off by Toyota!

So, as they say, and it surely rings true in this instance with Toyota, "BUYER BEWARE"
