oldnslo
Well as newbie I have asked a few questions and now am going to attempt to negotiate a deal on an 08 SE. May have SE in the garage tonight IF work doesn't get in the way. Warning; If I buy one I am sure I will have some technical "how to" questions :D As a side note, how long has the 2.4 Liter had the VVT option on it? I know from research the 2.4 has been out for several years but i couldn't find a source showing when the VVT was introduced. Thanks Roy
Leighcm
VVTi has been in that motor since it came out in the Camry in 2002, I believe. Post some pics for us if you get it!!
94cylcamry
Pardon me for asking...but what is VVTI?
Leighcm
VVTi = variable valve timing with intelligence. Basically, the system controls the camshaft timing to open and close the valves as necessary for the best performance, mileage, emissions, and overall efficiency. 94cylcamry
Whereas before the timing was the same regardless of driving conditions?
Leighcm
Whereas before the timing was the same regardless of driving conditions? Yes, no adjustment at all.
Leighcm
Well, at least before the "VVT" part. The "intelligence" part is just improved technology.
oldnslo
Yes, no adjustment at all. Leighcm, just so there is limited confusion on my aprt and possibly others. Before VVT VALVE timing or opening was not adjustable. Engine Ignition Timing has and probably always will be adjusted. I don't want some one getting Valve and Ignition timing mixed up. Leighcm, don't have a digital camera so will have to borrow a friends to take pictures of the new Rice Grinder :D Must have been used for the bleached Rice since it is white :D thanks for all of the help... Is there a "How To" section on this Forum? I do all of my own maintenace and would like to know if there is a place to look for info. Hopefully it won't be needed for a lonnnnnng time. Roy P.S. How do I get the smell of burning Rice and Squirrell **it...... :)
Leighcm
Congrats on the new car!! You ended up with the Camry, right? No "how-to" section yet. That's something we might want to start building someday, but we haven't gotten there yet. Toyota.com does have maintenance schedules for your car though. Look in the owner's section. Are you talking about the engine smell? Smells like it's burning? The engines come with some sort of coating that goes away after a couple hundred miles or so. Roy As I look back, it looks like it was not very clear that I was just talking about valves...thank you for making it easier for everyone!! Yes it is an 08 Camry SE with four "Rice Eating Squirrels" Yup, better start buidling a "How To" section since I am a die hard shade tree mechanic, busted knuckles, bruised ego and all I suspect it is a combination of engine and exhaust coatings being cooked off. As Murphys law is still alive and well, we drove less than ten miles before it started to rain. This seems to have helped wash some of the oils etc off smell is pretty much gone at 120 miles.
