Hooking up GPS system on a 2002 Prius

Bought a used 2002 Toyota Prius that has a GPS monitor but when I press the map/destination button a message pops up that says external system not connected. My local dealer suggested I post this problem with a prius chat board to see if anyone might be able to offer some suggestions on getting it activated. Thanks, Dan Humphrey, Athens, GA
