  1. As you can see it has been a great deal of time since I posted this question on this site. I also have followed this same topic on the Toyota UK site for some time. I have tried all of the popular suggestions, the Idle Air Control theory and the coolant temperature sensor theory on the UK site. After trying many different diagnostic tests I could not come up with a difinitive problem with any of the systems on this car. It appeared to me to be similar to a vacuum leak but it was very intermittant. There were no codes present of any kind, I even questioned several dealer and independent mechanics that said this would be a very costly thing to try to narrow down. I finally figured that even though I had removed inspected and cleaned the EGR valve that this could be one item that could cause this type of problem. Severa; mechanics told me that if this was the problem that there would be a check engine light and an error code. At any rate I purchased an EGR valve and gasket at the local Toyota dealer and am happy to report that this has eliminated all problems with the vehicle and the car runs like new. The car has 80,000 miles at this time and the last 6000 miles have been symptom free since the fix.
  2. My neice just purchased a 1997 Avalon XL from a Toyota dealer and was told that the car did not have keyless entry. I am not convinced that the salesman was correct as this seems to be a loaded car with leather and alloys. Can anyone tell me how I can find out if this car is a keyless entry car so that we can get this young lady a remote for her car . Thanks
  3. I am going to give the IAC diagnostic a try, but this is such an intermittent problem I am not sure it will tell me anything. Thank you very much for the link to the manuals what a great reference tool to have available! This is definitely one of those things that you wish would just fail altogether so that you could figure it out.
  4. The hose was checked when we were working on cleaning the IAC. Thanks for the input though, this is one of the most puzzling things I have ever encountered on a car.
  5. I have a 96 Camry 4cyl with 66000 miles. The car sometimes shudders at speed and then when you pull up to a light the idle fluctuates eratically the car sometimes dies.It always restarts and runs fine the problem seems to be more frequent when it is warmer outside. You can sometimes put the car in neutral and give it gas and the car will idle normally. Sometimes the problem reappears other times it runs fine. Mechanics I know have been unable to get the car to do it when they have it. I have cleaned the IAC with carb cleaner and the EGR I have replaced the coolant temperature sensor and no change. There is no check engine light. This car has been in the family since new and has run perfectly until now but I am afraid someone is going to get into an accident when it dies unexpectedly, any advice would be greatly appreciated.
