As you can see it has been a great deal of time since I posted this question on this site. I also have followed this same topic on the Toyota UK site for some time. I have tried all of the popular suggestions, the Idle Air Control theory and the coolant temperature sensor theory on the UK site. After trying many different diagnostic tests I could not come up with a difinitive problem with any of the systems on this car. It appeared to me to be similar to a vacuum leak but it was very intermittant. There were no codes present of any kind, I even questioned several dealer and independent mechanics that said this would be a very costly thing to try to narrow down. I finally figured that even though I had removed inspected and cleaned the EGR valve that this could be one item that could cause this type of problem. Severa; mechanics told me that if this was the problem that there would be a check engine light and an error code. At any rate I purchased an EGR valve and gasket at the local Toyota dealer and am happy to report that this has eliminated all problems with the vehicle and the car runs like new. The car has 80,000 miles at this time and the last 6000 miles have been symptom free since the fix.
