Replacing high beam headlamp

Just bought a 2009 Avalon from original owner; have all repair/maintenance receipts, and notice that both high beam lamps have already been replaced (a couple of years ago). One of them is out again. Is this an item we can replace at home? Or must the vehicle go to a dealer/repair shop? Also, I noticed in the owner's manual it was noted that leaving the high-beams on for an "extended period" (no time mentioned) would cause them to "explode." Has anyone had this happen?
